THE RAINY SEASON OR RAINY SUMMER.

Among interesting Machu Picchu facts, the two seasons that form its weather is the most important. As the name implies, between December to April, copious and intense rains are present all days over Machu Picchu. 75% of annual precipitations occur in this season, resulting in 91% of humidity all day. That means foggy days, humidity, rain, and muddy paths (Once inside the citadel). Moreover, every 3 or 4 days, the mornings will be opaque totally. The average minimum can drop to 46 – 52ºF (8 – 11ºC) becoming the coldest months of all year. But, not all have to be negative, the low number of tourists is an advantage for someone who wants to visit the citadel during this season and have Machu Picchu completely for oneself.

Are Hiking Poles Necessary For The Inca Trail?

While hiking poles are not an absolute requirement for the Inca Trail, most people do choose to take them because they offer a sense of security and several benefits that can enhance your trekking experience.

From improved stability and balance to reduced impact on joints and better endurance, poles can be invaluable companions on this challenging journey.

However, they are not essential and if you’re a fit, uninjured and have some hiking experience then you should definitely be able to manage without them.

Ultimately, the decision is yours, and if you’re still not sure the best way to decide is by tackling a hilly hike without poles before you leave for Peru and seeing how you manage.

If you have never used hiking poles before, it might be beneficial to try them out on shorter hikes or during training sessions to determine their suitability for your trekking style.

THE LORD OF THE EARTHQUAKES.

El Señor de los Temblores, or Taytacha Temblores (Lord of the Earthquakes), one of the principal objects of devotion in Cuzco. It is a carved image of the crucified Christ, popularly believed to have been sent as a gift by Charles V but most probably fashioned by local artists. Originally known as the Lord of a Good Death, after the earthquake of 1650 the figure became known as the Lord of the Earthquakes. Since 1741, its procession has taken place on Monday of Holy Week. Over time the image of Christ has become so darkened by the smoke and heat of the candles that accompany it in procession that it now appears to be an Indian or a black Christ. Declared the patron of Cuzco, the image is housed in the cathedral. The procession, accompanied by city officials, is a major tourist attraction.

Just over 35 kilometers away is one of Cusco’s most underrated attractions. The Moray ruins are impressive Inca ruins. These beautiful ruins are placed in the Sacred Valley, not far from the Imperial City. This impressive attraction is rarely mentioned in distinguished books and guides, so it is not crowded with visitors and tourists. But this does not mean that it is not a popular tour in the area. This beautiful attraction is often combined with the Salinas de Maras on different tours of Cusco. But it is a great alternative to explore if you have the time available. It is worth knowing its history and witnessing these beautiful concentric platforms.

What is the Sacred Plaza of Machu Picchu?
The Sacred Plaza was the most important center of religious rituals in Machu Picchu. As its name indicates, it was a plaza located around the Main Temple and the Temple of the 3 Windows , two of the most notable religious sites.
The platform where it is located was designed by the Incas following a rectangular shape of approximately 400 square meters. Ceremonies were held there in honor of the sun, the mountains and other Inca gods.
The Sacred Plaza is in the center of the upper sector of Machu Picchu, the 'Hanan'. From there you can ascend some stone steps until you reach the Intihuatana or 'Sundial'.
Some researchers also suggest that this physical space marked the social spaces of the city. That is to say, it had a distinctive status of the elite of Machu Picchu with respect to the rest of the population.
The square is visited daily by hundreds of tourists within Machu Picchu hours (from 6 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon).

The best time of day to visit Machu Picchu is early in the morning. It is the time when the site is less crowded and the light is more beautiful. The sun rises over the ancient ruins around 6:00 am, so an early start is recommended. At this time, the morning mist still lingers in the air and the sky is usually clear and bright, creating the perfect conditions for taking fantastic photographs and enjoying the ruins in peace and quiet.

The focal point of the historic center of the UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Cusco is Plaza de Armas. It’s one of the most beautiful plazas in Peru and is full of action at all times.
Plaza de Armas was once the main plaza in the former capital of the Inca Empire of Tawantinsuyu. It’s surrounded by buildings rich both in history and in beauty.
Before colonial times, the Incas used to celebrate the Sun Festival (Inti Raymi) there each year. They called the plaza Warriors’ Square (Huacaypata). Many significant events took place there. Francisco Pizarro claimed Cusco for Spain in the plaza, and Túpac Amaru II, leader of a native uprising, was beheaded there in 1781.

Water sources
There are a series of fountains and waterfalls in Ollantaytambo, today they are popularly known as “Temple of Water” and the “Bath of the Ñusta”. All these fountains must have served liturgical and ceremonial purposes to sacralize the water and as commonly believed for toilet functions.

Scarce oxygen, cold temperatures, and intense ultraviolet radiation make the Andes a tough place to live. How did humans adapt to such heights? A new study of ancient and modern DNA suggests in some South American highlanders, the answer includes changes to their heart muscles. The same study found that ancient highlanders adapted to digest starch more easily as they came to rely on potatoes for food, and that they most likely split from their lowland brethren some 8750 years ago.

08/12/2023

Many of the streets in the historic center of Cusco are completely cobblestone. In fact, not only the floor is made of stones, but also the walls.

The main characteristics of Inca architecture were the perfect assembly of the stone blocks and the quality with which they were polished. The Inca Civilization did not know iron, so the quality of their work was achieved with the extraordinary knowledge of lithic material, and using simple tools.

It is assumed that the construction of the main works of Inca architecture demanded enormous amounts of labor, which generally came from the people conquered by the Empire. This demonstrates a very high degree of social organization.

Cusco stands out for the sobriety of its earthquake-proof walls, very frequent in this territory.

A clear example is the cobblestone of Hatun Rumiyoc street, where the Stone of the 12 angles is located. The latter is one of the most popular attractions in the city of Cusco. It is a huge polished stone, which fits perfectly in each of its corners with the rest of the stones that form the wall. The visit to this place is free of charge.

Somewhere over the rainbow might just be in Peru. The South American nation is home to a spectacular array of natural sights, but one, in particular, has become wildly Instagram-famous in the past few years. Vinicunca, also known as Winikunka or Rainbow Mountain, is a striking geological landmark because of its colorful stripes which are made up of layers of 14 different minerals. Located in the Andes Mountains near the city of Cusco, the mountain has become a popular side trip for travelers on their way to and from the ruins of Machu Picchu.
