A holiday trajectory normally apes life: there are ups and downs – but the ups hopefully outweigh the downs in the long run. This was on my mind during the penultimate stop on our Peruvian adventure, in the now less-trammelled Colca Valley.

I’ve been so fortunate to travel the world, visiting all seven continents, experiencing so many different cultures, meeting so many wonderful people, and taking in so many breath-taking sights. But I’ve never been fortunate enough to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I’m in awe of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s beauty and history. Perhaps another family challenge is on the cards… Peruvian style!

The first grapevines were brought to Peru shortly after its conquest by Spain in the 16th century. Spanish chroniclers from the time note the first winemaking in South America took place in the hacienda Marcahuasi of Cuzco. The largest and most prominent vineyards of the 16th and 17th century in the Americas were established in the Ica valley of south-central Peru.

Already in the 16th century, Spanish settlers in Peru began producing aguardiente distilled from fermented grapes. Since at least 1764, Peruvian aguardiente was called "pisco" after its port of shipping.

Last Tuesday we celebrated the 482 Anniversary of Lima - the capital of Peru, began with it's foundation by Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535. The city was established on the valley of the Rímac River in an area populated by the Ichma (pre-Incan culture). It became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru and site of a Real Audiencia in 1543.

In reality people have been living in Lima for many thousands of years before the Spanish arrived, today people from all over the world call the Peruvian capital home!!

Hola FB World and friends - I am still in Lima - Peru enjoying myself a lot, going to the beach, eating delicious peruvian food, drinking pisco sours, going out to dance to packed salsa venues with live salsa bands, spending quality time with my parents, relatives, wife and son.
