Puedes encontrar plantas de aproximadamente 3,000 años de antigüedad en la Puna de los Andes, a una altura de entre 3200 y 4500 metros sobre el nivel del mar?
La Yareta (Azorella compacta o Azorella yareta) crece un aproximado de 1.4 mm al año, esa lentitud en su crecimiento hace que se pueda encontrar plantas tan antiguas. Esta planta crece en matas muy densas, para reducir la pérdidas de calor, y muy cerca del suelo donde la temperatura del aire es de 1 o 2 ºC.
