Photo by . “The Twelve-wire Touch”, is one of the newest additions to my fine art print store for all you Birds-of-Paradise fans out there. Did you know that those twelve wires emanating from the backside of a male Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise are actually used to brush the female with during courtship? When the female approaches the male closely on his display pole, he actually spins around and brushes her with them, as you can see in this image that captured the moment. Swipe to see the video. Visit www.timlamanfineart.com (or link in bio) to see the print options, on sale now!

In 1987 with Tony Palliser and Hans Beste we spent two months hitch-hiking and birding through Papua New Guinea. Our trip took us to Kiunga and Tony came out of the flooded forest and told us that he had seen Campbell’s Fairywren, Golden-backed Whistler and Little Paradise-Kingfisher. We went back and found the kingfisher but never the other species. By 2000 I was making annual trips birding in Kiunga and in about 2010 there was another report of the mysterious Fairywren. Then a couple more reports-then a photo, then another photo and it was starting to get pinned down very occasionally. I made a trip to Lake Murray where Brian Coates found it but three days in the forest and nothing. This bird was getting to me. Two days ago the jinx was laid to rest on the Kwatu River. It seems they favour tree falls in pristine forest that leads to a surge of regrowth. Edmund and Glen got us into a site and boom 💥-up popped three individuals. With Max Breckenridge, Samuel Kepuknai and Jimmy Woram.

It looks like we made a major mammal discovery on a recent trip to Papua New Guinea. Spotlighting near Kiunga, Glen found this giant Cuscus in the crown of a primary forest tree. It had a large infant with it. Currently the only large pale Cuscus on the southern watershed of PNG is Spotted Cuscus and I sort of took it for granted that it must be this species which is quite variable in colour and patterning but the black saddle is a feature of the rare and endangered Black-spotted Cuscus-known only from the northern watershed from very few specimens. Max Breckenridge took these good photographs and I think it can only be this rare species and a significant range extension. Included here is a photograph from Tim Flannery’s Mammals of New Guinea. It shows just how large this rare Cuscus is. Hopefully Team Kiunga United: Samuel Kepuknai Jimmy Woram Edmund, Glen and the team can help protect this rare national treasure.

It was once in life time experience that I will never forget.

I stayed at Watame Camp four nights, one of the most important target is to photograph this amazing Flame Bowerbird display, which I only saw on BBC before, I was just in my second year of birding, it had immense impact on me, I felt like I could photograph many interesting bird species in remote area.

I watched and photographed it’s displaying for nearly 40 minutes, at the time, I was struggling with fog got inside the lens, however after wiping off the moist on my lens, I resumed my photographing mode quickly, I am so happy that I still produced many nice photos of this am amazing bird.

Kiunga is an extraordinary place for birding, we encountered many other cool birds as well. I hope I can go back one day soon. In the mean time, I would like to thank Samuel Kepuknai and Warren Dutton for accommodating me and guiding me for birding in this beautiful land.
