Home to the rare singing dogs, the mythical Mount Giluwe is located in Imbonggu, Mendi and Tambul.

It is an old shield volcano with vast alpine grassland. Ancient volcanic plugs form its two summits, with the central peak the highest and an east peak about 2 kilometres away at 4,300 meters.

Giluwe has the distinction of being the highest volcano on the Australian continent and Oceania, and is thus one of the Volcanic Seven Summits.

Todaka the Historical Site

Tundaka is the place of sacrifice where our ancestors valued of as unique and holy. The place is located in the frontier of Enga and Hela Provinces particularly in Kandep Electorate.

In the past our for fathers from surrounding communities gathered together, ready to offer their resources like pigs, sugar cane, kaukau and other greens as a means of sacrifice. They strongly believed and lived by the rules and principles. Before the actual offerings made they gathered all the resources in a certain place called 'Kepla Anda' exist in the middle of a little swamp called 'Sas Pau'. Selectively, there were few key men who have an ultimate power to command and control. Ordinary men do respect those key men as superiors.

They just dropped off those things in that island and went 7 Kilometres towards Todaka Cave without anything in their hands. Strangely, they have discovered their valuable things piled up in a certain location just closed to that Cave and they normally surprise. Again, they used to take up their things back and pile them in the most holy place just close to a Cave. Before they presented to the Chief of all the key men they promise not to do any wrong things like never before. The Chief will call out and say close all eyes and never breath for a minute. Suddenly, the things piled up usually disappeared.

After that, they normally come home and as a result the men who actually participated have an ultimate power to prophesier the future events. They will know in advance what will going to happen in the recent times and in the future.

Its unbelievable for most of you but it has happened and it is a true indeed. The story has passed on from generation to generation up until today.

Photo below shows Todaka Rock and Sas Pau respectively.

Tourism promotes love, environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, hygiene, employment opportunity, cash flows, etc.

Our government needs to wake up and invest heavely in developing this industry and it will see its full potential.

Tourism only has the power to eradicate poverty, empower the population with the knowledge of appreciation of who they are and what they have lived for ages.

Untapped Tourism Potential in Kandep

Tourism industry is one of the world's most rapidly growing industries. The growth has turned into a virtual boom in the beginning of the twenty first century. Most of the developed countries depends on Tourism because it is the sustainable industry.

In PNG we are heavily depends on mining and agricultural industries. However, mining is the non renewable resource, meaning once extracted, it shuts down due to its operational expactancy. For instance, Misima minding has been closed down after its operation.

Now, tourism industry is the sleeping giant in PNG. Porgera mine will shut down after 10 years time, OK Tedi mine will shut down after few years time. LNG will shut down after 25 years time from the internal source. But tourism and agriculture will sustain the economy of this country. The government is now focusing on developing tourism in PNG as one of its strong policies to ensure retain the wealth and sustainability of the economy.

Hence, in Kandep we have some tourism products which are untapped and unseen. We have an historical site like Tundaka Cave, beautiful lakes and fast flowing rivers, interested hundreds of stories. Magnificent vegetation and amazing flora and fauna, our culture and tradition. We need to market these products domestically and internationally. But the issues at the moment are our primitive mindsets, insufficient infrastructural development like airport, road conditions and bridges. Government need to be considered on those areas because tourism develops in most cvilized society.
