A reminder for everyone

It's Scams Awareness Week - an important reminder to keep an eye out for scammers who may pose as the Department of Home Affairs and threaten you with immediate arrest, deportation, or ask you to pay money.

If you receive a phone call, text or email from the department, slow down and ask yourself “who’s really there?”.

Our staff will always identify themselves before they ask for any information. You can verify that you are speaking with a departmental officer by asking them to confirm your file number or your visa application lodgement date.

Our staff will never ask for your:
- Credit card information
- Banking details
- ImmiAccount password
- Payment over the phone

If you get a suspicious call or text message, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.

You can help us try to stop the scam or to warn others by reporting the scam to the National Anti-Scam Centre via Scamwatch.gov.au.

You can make a report to Scamwatch anonymously or on behalf of another person.

The new 2023 Australian Cohesion Index report helps us understand how Australia is tracking in key areas, and consider how we can better refine policies and programs to improve conditions across society.

Key results include overall good health and wellbeing and high levels of support for immigration and multiculturalism. It also highlights a decline in trust in government as well as national belonging.
