The City Government of Catbalogan headed by City Mayor Dexter Uy through the Catbalogan City Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office (CTCAIO) has installed ‘Tourism and Information Kiosks’ at select public and private cemeteries around the city for the Undas Season.

Each kiosks has available tourism brochures and leaflets together with tourism statistics collection to record the number of visitors for this long weekend.

Supported by the Catbalogan City Tourism Council (CTC) and the Local Culture & Arts Council of Catbalogan City (LCAC), the said kiosks are situated together with other tents from various national and civil society organizations assisting tourists, visitors and residents visiting said cemeteries.

This assistance desk is part of the campaign of the Department of Tourism through the DOT Eastern Visayas aimed to ensure a SAFE AND CONVENIENT travel and vacation in Catbalogan City and the whole Eastern Visayas region.

City Mayor Dexter Uy together with the Catbalogan City Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office (CTCAIO) has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Dr. Redentor Palencia, President of Samar State University (SSU) together with SSU Museum & Archives Head, Prof. Jhonil Bajado and SSU Advocacy on Gender & Women Advancement for National Development (SAGWAN), Director Charmaine Quiña.

The following four (4) projects are to be implemented in partnership with SSU, namely:
- Cultural Mapping Project Phase 2 specific on fishing practices of Catbalogan
- Souvenir-Making Training using recycled/recyclable materials among community-based tourism organizations;
- Boses han Babaye Season 2 among women and girl campus journalists;
- Gender Sensitivity Film Workshop among local filmmakers, vloggers, and social media influencers

The Catbalogan City Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office (CTCAIO) initiated this partnership together with the Local Culture & Arts Council of Catbalogan City (LCAC) Co-Chaired by Prof. Bajado and the Catbalogan City Tourism Council (CTC) Co-Chaired by Engr. Joseph Balisacan.

Said activities are to be implemented within 2024 coinciding with several national and international celebrations and observances.

Mabuhay! The Provincial Government of Samar and the University of Santo Tomas have created the Sustainable Strategic Tourism Development Plan for 2025-2034 to enrich Samar& #39;s tourism sector.

As part of this initiative, our team of researchers from UST is surveying to gather valuable insights that will shape the future of Samar's tourism. Your feedback is crucial in improving local attractions, enhancing the tourist experience, and protecting our cultural treasures.

To qualify for the survey:

● You must have visited the province for leisure, recreation, or business events for at least a day (as an excursionist) or overnight (as a tourist);
● You must be at least 18 years old; and
● Gender is not a criterion for participation.

To participate, simply scan the QR code provided. The survey is available in English and Tagalog and should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Earlier today, September 27, 2024 at Bodega Skol Bar, the 3rd Quarter Joint Council Meeting of the Catbalogan City Tourism Council (CTC) and the Local Culture & Arts Council of Catbalogan City (LCAC) was convened as called for by City Mayor Dexter Uy.

It was coincided with the World Tourism Day celebration today and part of the discussion was on tourism updates as shared by Catbalogan City Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office (CTCAIO) covering topics on tourism enterprise status in the city; statistics for both overnight and day tourists from 2019 to 2024; and the tourist arrivals and tourist receipts computations for the recent 2024 Manaragat Festival last August.

It was shared that during last August 2024, Catbalogan City recorded more than 16,000 overnight tourist, which was the highest ever recorded for any month and for any year since 2016, which was the year CTCAIO was officially established as a separate office.

Moreover, in terms of day tourists, from January to August of this year alone, more than 500,000 already was recorded to have visited tourism sites in Catbalogan, which was higher than the whole year consolidated statistics between 2019 to 2023.

In terms of cultural heritage program, the recent Manaragat Festival was mainly discussed during the said joint meeting, and one of the discussions was on the feedback survey among council members on the competitions and cultural presentations conducted along with points to improve for next year’s conduct.

And one of the highlights was the discussion on the themes and concepts for the 2025 Manaragat Festival, which was revealed to focus on literary and theater as a continuing effort to highlight the different cultural aspects and treasures of Catbalogan.

It was a fruitful meeting with the active participation of different stakeholders working together for a more active tourism industry and an engaged cultural life.

A project aimed at developing the "Comprehensive Tourism and Cultural Heritage Master Development Plan for Catbalogan City" will soon roll out as led by City Mayor Dexter Uy through the Catbalogan City Tourism, Culture, Arts & Information Office (CTCAIO) as supported by the Catbalogan City Tourism Council (CTC) and the Local Culture & Arts Council (LCAC).

The City Government of Catbalogan has no existing comprehensive Cultural Heritage Development Plan and on the other hand, an earlier Tourism Development Plan has already lapsed last 2019 and thus, there is a need to revisit, update and if necessary redefine the city’s priorities in terms of development in the tourism industry and the cultural heritage.

Anchored on the approved Executive and Legislative Agenda (ELA) 2023-2025, the approved City Development Plan 2023-2028, and the 2040 Derecho Uswag Catbalogan Vision, the tourism development agenda is tagged as while the cultural heritage development agenda is tagged as , 'kahusay' reflecting the beauty of natural and man-made tourism sites, and 'kultura' reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the city respectively anchored on the branding as "The City of Captivating Contrasts" or simply .

The administration of City Mayor Dexter Uy is keen in formulating these plans into one comprehensive master development plan to pave the city’s future developments and priorities towards a sustainable and resilient global metropolis.

The City Government of Catbalogan headed by City Mayor Dexter Uy joins the nation and the global community in celebrating the National Tourism Week on September 21-27, 2024 and World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024.

With the theme of "Tourism and Peace", the pursuit of peace is a continuing endeavor, and progress through tourism is more relevant than ever. Tourism can play a vital role as a catalyst for fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures and in supporting reconciliation processes. Moreover, tourism is clearly linked to the building blocks of peace- such as social justice, human rights, economic
equity, sustainable development, and broad-based democracy with the capability of non-violent conflict resolution. Tourism’s biggest strength, besides being an economic powerhouse, brings people together in non-adversarial circumstances.

Through the City Tourism, Culture, Arts and Information Office (CTCAIO) and supported by the Catbalogan City Tourism Council (CTC), tourism contribute not just towards economic upliftment but also on peace building among key stakeholders of the community thus establishing that potent role it plays towards sustainable development.

In the coming days and weeks, we will be featuring local sites, events, intangibles, and other tourism components and segments in Catbalogan City that reflects not just the character and identity but also the potentials and opportunities of our captivating contrasts.
