On the 3rd Saturday of the Fil-Am youth summer program "Paaralan sa Konsulado" organized by AFTA and the Philippine Consulate in New York, I volunteered to teach Geography of the Philippines. I guided the students in painting a map of the Philippines on canvas using stencils I had prepared. We focused on labeling the three major islands—Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—and identifying the surrounding bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Philippine Sea to the west, and the Celebes Sea to the south.

The Philippines, an archipelago of 7,641 islands, was our main subject. I was delighted to see the students engaged as they carefully painted and labeled, discussing the country's geography. Each student received a set of pictures depicting the Philippines' natural beauty—its beaches, volcanoes, endemic flora and fauna, festivals, historical landmarks, local people, local activities, and climate. They learned the Filipino names for these elements and described them enthusiastically.

For their final task, I asked each student to explain the geography of the Philippines based on their artwork. I was thrilled with their presentations, which reflected their newfound understanding. Despite time constraints, the project-based approach proved effective in conveying the diverse aspects of Philippine geography—from its physical features to its cultural richness.

On this Independence Day, I reflect on the journey and growth over the years. Moving to the US a decade ago, I was full of expectations and in a rush to shape my future. I believed I could control every aspect of my life, but often found myself in conflict between my high hopes and reality. My situation often triumphed, leaving me feeling defeated. Through these challenges, I learned that it wasn't freedom I lacked, but patience and strategy. This realization has been a crucial part of my journey, teaching me to embrace patience and perseverance in pursuit of my goals. Happy Independence Day!
