BUSINESS: Danao aims industrial hub status
Danao City, Cebu is poised to reclaim its status as a leading industrial hub, aiming to enhance employment opportunities and revenue generation.
Mayor Thomas Mark โMixโ Durano, in an interview, shared the cityโs ambitious plans, revealing that Danao is positioning itself as a key industrial center, highlighted by the development of a two-hectare factory that will supply all Jollibee outlets across the Visayas by next year. This project is expected to generate employment for at least 600 workers.
โThe cityโs Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which designates zones for agriculture, industry, and agro-industrial development, has been approved locally and is now under review at the provincial level,โ Durano said.
Efforts to attract more investors are underway, with 300 hectares of industrial zones available for development. Partnerships with landowners are driving projects in shipbuilding, dry docking, and agro-industrial ventures, among others.
Durano also outlined plans for a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)-registered economic zone. However, expansion efforts to meet the required 25 hectares are still in progress.
Danao City is home to Cebu Mitsumi Inc., the provinceโs largest employer, with nearly 20,000 workers.
Last November, the Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index (CMCI) recognized Danao City as the โMost Improved Component City,โ an award given by the Department of Trade and Industry-Provincial Office. Additionally, the city received the Seal of Good Local Governance Award (SGLG).
โThese awards recognize the fruits of our prioritiesโmore livelihood and jobs for our people,โ Durano said.
BOOSTING EMPLOYMENT THROUGH IT AND BPO SECTORS
In addition to attracting light industrial investments, Danao City is actively positioning itself as a hub for the IT-BPM (Information Technology-Business Process Management) industry.
The city has launched workforce training initiatives, partnering with private schools and call center academies to graduate nearly 2,000 students annually. Many of these students receive city-sponsored tuition.
Companies like XP Solutions and Accenture have already established a presence in Danao, with plans to locate operations in a forthcoming 30-hectare IT park. Durano confirmed that investors in the IT Park project are in advanced negotiations with private developers.
To support this growth, Danao is enhancing its digital infrastructure. Currently, 30 out of the cityโs 42 barangays enjoy free Wi-Fi through a partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
The city is also offering tax incentives on a case-to-case basis to attract more investors, leveraging its strong track record with Japanese companies like Mitsumi.
Now classified as a second- class city, Danao is striving to achieve first-class city status through balanced growth across industries, sports tourism, and sustainability efforts.
The cityโs tagline, โDanao Life is Family,โ reflects its vision of fostering a community that balances industrial progress, environmental consciousness, and the well-being of its citizens across all age groups.
โWe have our own direction,โ said Durano. โDanao City is capable of achieving sustainable growth while staying true to our roots and values,โ he added.
Durano credited the cityโs strong foundation to the leadership of his grandfather and father.
โEven today, we see the fruits of their efforts with companies like Mitsumi, Double Dragon, and major cement factories still thriving here,โ he said. โ Ehda M. Dagooc
