The history of Guihulngan began as a simple Catholic mission. When it was originally constituted as a parish in 1856, the earliest records attesting to the existence of habitats in the region were written. The town's stormy past was characterized by fighting, and during World War II, it saw bloody combat. Guihulngan was already the largest locality in the Negros Oriental Province before it was designated as a city, in the year 2007. However, the city lost its cityhood along with other municipalities in the province after just 15 months. In just one year, in 2009, the ruling was overturned, and Guihulngan was once again considered a city.
