By: Pedro D. He stood watching.

Indunan
There is a rocky mount,more of a hill, 3-4 km away from poblacion,kiangan called Dumaling. Why it is called Dumaling is partly shrouded in mystery. It has a legend and a reason for the name of a village by its foothills. The name is however suggestive of a rocky mountain w/ rocks that could easily slide "dumaling" and cause havoc downhill to people passing by. On its west side is a face of

solid rock,w/c once upon a time
was with cracks nd fallen rocks below. The cause,elderlies say,is mirrored in a legend;
In the distant past,there was a nightly dancing and pounding or rice preparatory to a finale of a prestige feast "uya-uy" in one of its nearby villages. In one of many nights while young men and women were merrily dancing around bonfire of burning logs that grew dimmer and dimmer as the night pass to daylight there appeared from nowhere,a dark but very handsome youngster,almost naked except for a ruggef G-string wound about his waistline w/ an end inserted between his legs. The young women,in their fineries and kadangyan,ornamentals,noticed his presence and was attracted to him,inquiring who he was and where he came from. They requested him to dance w/ them. The young visitor could only say,he is Bingkulan, from a faraway village. He refused request to dance unless attired properly like the men around. So the young women of the village,in their desire to see Bingkulan dance, secured a Kadangyan G-string and other ornamentals (Ginittu,balituk etc..) from those who wore them and handled them to him to dress himself. With the brass gongs(gangha) beatings,the girls push Bingkulan to the dance ground. He dance so well,almost everybody was focused to him,forgetting to keep the bonfire burning brightly. The firelight got dimmer and dimmerand when its brightness was rekindled there was no Bingkulan around. He had disappeared to nowhere. There
was commotion among the crowd and panic by those who loaned Bingkulan his wears. No one knew the direction he took and a diviner ("mun-agba") was immediately called upon to divine his whereabouts. It was to a nearby mount,the diviner announced after moments of prayer to Gods, anitos,and ancestors. The nearby mount was no other than Mount Dumaling. Immediately searchers with torches and weaponries took the trail to the rocky mountain. They searhed everywhere,w/o results,they decided to pitch camp and wait for the day break,with ritual priests "munbaki"among them continuing their prayers for succor. They prayed to mountain spirits who they believed to be hiding Bingkulan but nothing happened,so they ask whoever can break the huge rock on top of mount Dumaling,animals and birds in different kind and species but still nothing has changed. By break of day "tantan-ang di algo" the searchers watched in an animation a little bird known as Duklaw-wit,for the manner,it is searching for food-flying here and there like a butterfly searching and poking at things to such or eat,the little bird kept flapping its tiny wings pecking at the rocks,one searcher go nearer to the the little bird and offered ricewine "baya",mysteriously, everytime the Duklaw-wit pecks,its tiny beak on the rock it cracks ad fAlls. As the Duklaww-wit pocked upon the rocks there were cracks following downhill and to the surprise of the watchers,an opening was seen. With wood poles the searchers helped themselves. They pried the rock covering the opening, and whoa! Wow,it was the opening of a two chamber caves. They finally see Bingkulan,and took all the Kadangyan Ornaments they have loaned him,the night he danced. No one knows for sure what had happened to Bingkulan or what the villagers did to him. But the Kadangyan Regalia (symbols) was recovered. Some say he was admonished and allowed to go his way in the name of Duklaw-wit and mountain spirits that revealed his hide-away. To a religious and superstitious people,all that had happened were the wills of gods and other spirit-beings w/supernatural powers. There were implications and illusions. Perhaps,it was said that Bingkulan was spirit-sent to the village of a people who prided themselves of thier wealth and ornamentations in order to humble them;the little bird "duklaw-wit" is a messenger of mountain spirits w/ mysterious powers and an illusion to lowly and small village united and not to be belittled by the mighty and larger villages of wealthy people. It was how Duit community got its name- a small sitio but could defend itself from enemies and feed multitudes of guests in prestige feasts. In social gatherings and during the spanish and american colonial days,when asked where they came from the inhabitants of Duit would answer proudly "from the habitat of Duklaw-wit"- hi b***n di duklaw-wit. In the course of time, Duit became the short of Duklaw-wit. The caves with in the interior of mount Dumaling were explored and became hide outs of the japanese soldiers during the World War 11,later became the burial place of ancestors past-a chamber exclusively for malea and a second chamber for females. Only clan members from its surrounding villages however,who own rice-lands and forested areas could be burried thereat. And there is a condition respected that only those of kadangyan ranks w/ the neccessary death shroud,wears animal offerings during death wakes would be burried in the caves,others in the surrounding of the mount. The rationale is that the lowly may not be accepted by the mountain spirits living therein. During the 2nd world war,the ancestral bones were scattered by the japanese soldiers who took cover in the caves.
