Metta’s William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet 2019 Fight Director - Joaquin Valdes
“Conflict is what creates drama. The more conflict actors finds, the more interesting the performance”. — Michael Shurtleff
Cast member of the UK and International Tour of "Miss Saigon" and "The King and I” — Joaquin Pedro Valdes staged the fight choreography for Romeo and Juliet 2019. Joaquin is one of the young veteran of the Philippine theater scene. He worked with some of the country’s top companies over the last 20 years. He was recently seen as “Mr. Wormwood” in Atlantis Theatrical’s Asian premier of Matilda.
Together with Joaquin, Batche Tan (Metta fight director and choreographer) ensures that every stunt works are safe and every fight scene looks realistic. Teaching the craft of staged combat also helped the actors to familiarize theatrical staging and combat techniques such as martial arts, swordplay, mock gunfights, and physical combat.
A good fight choreography can improve the overall quality of a play exponentially.

“Spectrum of Love” and “Falling into Love” Choreography by Lope Lim (for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet 2019)

Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption (Metta).
Metta takes its name from the Pali word for “Loving-Kindness” and “Friendliness For All”. In the same essence, the Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption or Metta, combines drama, dance, and music to allow every artistic possibility.
Established in 2004, Metta was born at the same time the Mother Rose Auditorium (MRA) was undergoing major renovations. Named after St. Marie Eugenie of Jesus, Foundresses of the Religious of the Assumption, Metta exists so that each child realize their full potential.
Metta takes its cue from the Assumption education, whose vision is to develop women of character, faith and substance; women who will help transform society. St. Marie Eugenie, who passionately believed in the transformation power of education, encouraged her congregation to "discover the specific talents and grace of each child". With this vision, Metta encourages, nurtures and celebrates the creativity of children with productions that would raise the consciousness of the students and the public in general.
Juilliard-trained actress and Assumption alumna, Ana Valdes-Lim was invited in 2004 by the College President, Sr. Josefina Magat, r.a., to oversee the theater construction and run the theater organizations as Metta Artistic Director.
Originally designed as a student-based theater group, it slowly evolved to encompass the Assumption College, San Lorenzo community and has since been carrying on as a community theater. The programs not only create extraordinary experiences that educate, challenge and inspire young people, it united the Assumption Community in the spirit of volunteerism, and act as a catalyst for community involvement, inspiration and support.
In 2018, Metta gave birth to iNay with Kindness Kitchen, Entheos, Artist Mentoring Program, Dance Your Prayer, Meditation Circles, Salamat Space and Awakin Circles.
