BORACAY, 1970s

Before Boracay transformed into a world famous tourist destination, it was a backpacker’s virgin paradise back in the late 70’s. A secluded island with no cars, shoes or electricity; a well-kept secret of the natives, landowners, and a small community of colorful characters: expats from Europe and the States, artists, hippies and beach bums, escaping the grind and looking for paradise. These people gave Boracay its first personality. They were here before anybody and took a chance and invested their lives and money into defining the island’s culture.

Andree Luces Abriam, My Uncle, the godfather of Boracay Island’s thriving nightlife and the island’s ambassador of the 80s sets the vibe for Boracay’s heyday of partying at his Beachcomber Bar.

In the early 1980’s the amount of backpackers visiting the island paradise Boracay became impressive enough numbers to warrant the birth of Beachcomber Bar and Disco which gave the once quiet island across the bay a nightlife!

It all began on 400 square meters of beachfront, a humble nipa hut bar with a comfort room and a small kitchen, an eight track player, old speakers ran by a car batteries, 10 cases of soft drinks and beer. On New Year’s Eve of 1982 the legendary Beachcomber Bar – the first “official” bar on Boracay Island opened and became the forerunner of the genre of music and dance establishments that so proliferate the pulsating nightlife of the island today. The rest, they say, is history…

Back before Boracay was a famous tourist destination, it was primarily a place for backpackers and locals to meet and have a good time. There was no other bar on the island, so everyone that wanted to party and have a nightlife would end up at Beachcomber. Rum was cheaper than ice, the dance floor was cool sand between your toes, and the disco lights were the stars and moon above.
