LET'S GO TRY!
PASTEL DE CAMIGUIN
Pastel was originally a Spanish term for cake although in English it is described as a soft dough coffee bun. The Bollozos of Camiguin were the first to make it a part of Camiguinon cuisine during special occasions. The existing flavors of Vjandep pastels are: regular and special yema; ube; durian;chocolate; cheese; langka; pineapple; strawberry; macapuno, guava and mango. Except for yema, all the other flavors are produced by order basis only, Jose said.

In Camiguin, a box of six pieces cost P46 for regular yema; P77 for special yema, durian and chocolate; P60 each for other flavors. A box of dozen pieces cost P98 for regular yema; P145 for special yema; P143 for durian and chocolate and P115 for all other flavors.

The Soda Swimming Pool is situated in the town of Catarman which is 30 minutes away from Mambajao, the main town of Camiguin. It is named such because according to folks, it used to taste like soda. All you need to do is to add sweeteners such as caramel and sugar to taste like Coke. The locals visit and swim in the pool to refresh themselves and not to drink the soda water.

It was said to be that Camiguin got its name from a native tree called “Kamagong” which thrives by Lake Mainit in the province of Surigao del Norte. With the original inhabitants of the islands being Manobos who migrated from Surigao, it is no wonder that the name of the province was derived from something where the first settlers came from.

The first Spanish settlements were built in 1898 in the area presently called Guinsiliban, which came from an old Kinamiguin word “Guinsilipan”, meaning to look out for pirates from a watchtower as evidenced by an old Spanish watchtower still standing in the area. It wasn’t until 1679 when the first major Spanish settlement was established in Katagman (now called Barangay Bonbon) of Katadman (now known as Catarman). When Mt. Vulcan Daan erupted on May 1, 1871, the town was destroyed and all that remained of the old town were the ruins of the ancient Spanish church, a convent and a bell tower called the Guiob Ruins.
