LET THEM HIKE: Why “Facebook Mountaineers” Deserve a Place on the Trails

I once overheard a group of seasoned hikers at Mt. Apo’s famous “White Sand” talking down on young hikers, dismissing them as “Facebook mountaineers.” They laughed at how these newbies spent more time taking photos than appreciating the climb and accused them of hiking solely for the “clout”.

As a young and impressionable hiker that time, their words stayed with me - not because I agreed but because they reflected a growing problem in the hiking community - GATEKEEPING.

You’ve also probably seen the occasional post on groups like Akyat Bundok or Climber that are low key shading or straight up criticizing hikers who love to take photos - especially selfies - during their hike.

Shouldn’t the mountains, symbols of freedom and inclusion, be open to everyone no matter their reasons for hiking?

For many new hikers, their journey begins with curiosity, a friend’s invitation, or even the allure of a stunning post on FB or Tiktok. And while seasoned climbers may roll their eyes at the idea of someone hiking “just for the post,” the reality is that everyone starts somewhere.

A selfie at the summit or Tiktok dance along the trail is not inherently shallow - it can be a first step toward appreciating the beauty of nature and the challenges of mountaineering.

We all need to remember that every experienced hiker was once a beginner, and motivations often deepen with experience.

Instead of criticizing these so-called “Facebook mountaineers,” why not welcome them into the fold? Posting photos or documenting a hike doesn’t diminish the experience; it celebrates it.

Social media has made mountains more accessible to a wider audience, sparking interest in outdoor adventures among people who might never have considered them before. A post that catches someone’s attention could be the catalyst for their first climb - and perhaps the beginning of a lifelong passion for the outdoors.

What seasoned hikers often forget is that hiking is a deeply personal experience. While some might climb for solitude, others climb for connection, for community, or for a sense of accomplishment. These motivations are all equally valid.

Yes, some may begin their journey for the novelty of a summit photo, but the mountains have a way of teaching valuable lessons to those who visit.

The grueling ascents, the unpredictable weather, and the raw beauty of nature instill humility, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the world. Over time, even a so-called “Facebook mountaineers” may discover a profound love for hiking that goes beyond their perceived need for clout.

Criticism and gatekeeping only serve to alienate those who are just beginning their hiking journeys. Instead, let’s offer guidance and support.

Show them the deeper lessons the mountains can teach and help them understand the importance of respecting nature and leaving no trace. By doing so, we nurture a new generation of hikers who will not only appreciate the outdoors but also protect it for the future.

So let’s stop shaming people for how they start their journey. Whether someone climbs for the photos, the thrill, or the challenge, the mountains never discriminate - and neither should we.
