09/11/2016

Thailand lost the Father of The Nation, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, on October 2016 at the age of 88 following 70 years of reign on the throne.

The country is now on a 30-day state of mourning. The government announced a one year period of mourning. Flags are to fly at half-mast for 30 days and people are asked to avoid "joyful events". As Thailand is plunged into mourning by the passing of their much-loved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, here's what tourists visiting the popular holiday destination need to know.

WHAT TO WEAR?

As part of the official mourning period, Thai people will wear black, white, or dark colors. (Government employees and the Royal Family will wear black for a full year, which is their designated period of mourning) However, it is not mandatory for travelers or expats to wear black. The Tourism Ministry of Thailand made a similar request, noting that "if possible, visitors should wear somber and respectful clothing when in public. Travelers are advised to take local advice and to dress and behave appropriately in other public areas.

Access to entertainment, including restaurants, bars, and shopping areas may be restricted and you should behave respectfully when in public areas.

WHAT TO DO?

Hotels and hotel facilities are open as normal in line with the government's request for normalcy. Beach resorts operate as normal but there will be no parties on the beach.

WHAT TO SAY?

Travelers should feel free to vocalize their condolences. You can say “sorry for the loss” and ask people how they do and commiserate with them a little bit.

Most of the traditional and cultural events will be taking place as usual, although the celebrations may be changed for appropriateness as a mark of respect, or the events may be dedicated to the memory of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The following is a useful information about status of attractions and events changed during the mourning period.

TOURIST ATTRACTION

• Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace will be closed until 31 October 2016 or further noticce, as the venues of the Royal Funeral Rites.

• Lumpini Boxing Stadium Ramindra and Ratchadamnoen Boxing Stadium will be closed for one month since 14 October 2016.

EVENTS & SHOW

• Loy Krathong events for 2016 will be going ahead nationwide as planned, with a mark of respect during the official mourning period for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

• Bangkok Street Show 2016 at Lumpini Park (10-12 December 2016).

• The 5th Tha Muang Festival (4-6 November 2016).

• Harmony World Puppet in Kanchanaburi 2016 (1-7 November 2016) postponed to new dates on 20-26 February 2017.

• Krabi Adventurous Trophy 2016 (4-5 November 2016).

• 41st Thai Tiew Thai 2016 : Will be held as scheduled on 3-6 November 2016.
