The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lord’s Transfiguration, more commonly known as the Palo Cathedral, stands as a testament to faith, history, and renewal.

Built in 1596, this iconic church has withstood the tests of time, serving as a place of worship, a refuge during war, and a beacon of hope in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda. In 1954, the Philippine Historical Committee designated Palo Cathedral as a heritage zone/ historical center.

The iconic line "I Shall Return" by General Douglas MacArthur is often misquoted as the speech he made when he landed on the shores of Leyte in 1944. While MacArthur famously pledged, "I Shall Return" during his retreat from the Philippines in 1942, his actual words upon landing on Leyte in October 1944 were "I have returned." This moment marked a pivotal point in World War II, as the Allied forces launched a successful campaign to reclaim the Philippines from Japanese occupation.

MacArthur's return to the Philippines was not just a military victory but a symbol of hope and resilience. His arrival was met with cheers and celebration, and he gave a speech declaring:

: On this day, 11 years ago, Supertyphoon Yolanda struck Leyte and the whole of Eastern Visayas, leaving devastation in its wake. We commemorate this day by remembering the lives lost and the unimaginable destruction that reshaped our communities.

Yet, out of the wreckage, Leyteños rose—undaunted, resilient, and united. Through hardship, we have shown the world the strength of our spirit, rebuilding not only our homes but our hope and dreams.

We are Leyteños. Strong in the face of storms, unbreakable in spirit, and proud of our enduring resilience.
