🚦 More Roads = More Traffic

It's a concept known as "Induced Demand." When we build more roads, we often think it will reduce congestion. However, the opposite tends to happen. Increased road capacity can lead to more traffic as people change their driving behavior and more vehicles hit the road.

This isn't just a theory—it's a well-documented phenomenon in urban planning and transportation studies. The more roads we build, the more traffic we attract, essentially leading to the same or even worse congestion levels we originally aimed to alleviate.

So, what’s the solution? It might be time to rethink our approach to transportation infrastructure. Investing in public transit, promoting carpooling, and encouraging alternative modes of transportation like cycling and walking can help manage traffic more sustainably and effectively.

What are your thoughts or experiences with induced demand? Have you seen this phenomenon in action where you live or work?

-

I've seen this firsthand in my city. We expanded a major highway a few years back, thinking it would ease traffic. Fast forward to today, and it's just as congested as before!

I totally agree that we need to shift our focus. Public transit has been a game-changer for me. I started taking the bus to work, and not only do I avoid traffic stress, but I also get some reading done during my commute. Win-win!

Have you noticed any cities successfully tackling this issue? I'd love to hear about some positive examples where alternative transportation methods have made a real difference. Maybe we could learn from their strategies and push for similar changes in our own communities.

What to Expect Under the New Management

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has officially been handed over to the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), led by San Miguel Corp. (SMC), for a massive P170.6-billion, 15-year rehabilitation project. The aim is to transform the 76-year-old airport and improve the experience for travelers. Here’s what you can expect under the new NAIA:

1. Quick Fixes in the Next 6 Months

• Renovated Comfort Rooms: Modernized facilities for a more pleasant traveler experience.
• Improved Water Supply: Securing a reliable water source for the airport’s daily operations.
• Additional Seats: More seating options to accommodate the increasing passenger volume.
• New Cooling Systems: Enhanced air conditioning for better comfort in terminals.

2. Improved Connectivity

• Faster Internet: Upgrading internet speed and connectivity across all terminals to address previous reports of NAIA being one of Southeast Asia’s worst airports for online access.

3. Enhanced Mobility Facilities

• Upgraded Elevators, Escalators, and Walkalators: Priority repairs to make it easier for travelers to move around the airport, improving overall accessibility.

4. Additional Transport Options

• Ease of Access: NNIC aims to bring in more transport options, providing travelers with better and more convenient ways to reach the airport.

5. Major Upgrades by the 5th Year

• New Terminal: Constructing a new terminal to increase NAIA’s annual passenger capacity from 35 million to 62 million.
• Terminal Reassignments: Potential changes in terminal assignments to improve runway efficiency and minimize flight delays.
• Expanded Aircraft Movement: Increasing the airport’s aircraft movement to 48 per hour, up from the current 40.

6. Changes in Passenger Fees (Effective September 2025)

• Higher Passenger Charges: International flight fees will rise by 72% to P950, while domestic departure fees will increase by 95% to P390.
• Increased Takeoff Rates: Airlines will face higher takeoff rates, which may impact overall flight costs.

Concerns and Challenges

• Rate Hikes: Advocacy groups are opposing the fee increases, urging NNIC to implement the promised improvements first.
• Timely Completion: Skepticism over SMC’s ability to complete the rehabilitation on time, given past delays in other major infrastructure projects.

The long-awaited NAIA rehabilitation is now underway. With these changes, the goal is to create a better travel experience for passengers while addressing current issues and future needs.
