Lagalag Exploration

Lagalag Exploration Travel and exploration pages, diary, photos, videos, thoughts... This is a travel blog and photo repository of our collective adventures and trips.

A lot of it will be about cycle touring - road, mountain bike, folding - with panniers, without or in-between - whatever. But definitely it will not be about racing and records. Hey, we're not athletes here and we love our granny gears! This is where this online log started: http://lagalagexploration.multiply.com/

Keep Up!

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 9-10

Two days left to complete the whole circuit. I was thinking of spending an extra 3 days up the Great Western Tiers but i figured I've seen enough farmland and lakes.

Did 117 kms on day 9. I Normally don't cycle that far but the wind was behind me and there are only 2 short hills before Deloraine. The rest was flat.

Also Launceston would then be only 32kms from the campsite.

All good!

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, rest day

Spent three nights at Cradle Mountain. Took a short spin to The park and walked the family friendly circuit around Dove Lake. Hiked up to Marions lookout for a better view. The second day was spent lounging around the camp kitchen having beer and coffee all day long.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 8

Decided to push for Cradle Mountain and take my rest day there. Two passes to climb today - doable and a relatively short ride supposedly. But I realised on the first climb that I haven't rested for a week. It was a slow grind.

But at least I booked myself a bed at the park - needing a shower. Looking forward to that.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 7

I decided to skip Strahan and do Anthony Road instead. Again, not the usual touring route but I wanted to see more mountains this time (Strahan is an old coastal town).

Up and down into Queenstown, then another slightly painful climb onto Anthony road. The goal was to reach Lake Rosebery just before Tullah - there should be a couple of nice campgrounds there.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 5

Except for one hill and a slight headwind, the ride to Derwent Bridge was easy. Took a much suggested gravel route to bypass the main highway.

Just checked out the main attraction which was Lake St Clair, and then crossed the road to the river feeding Lake King William to the south. Spent the night at another campground used by anglers with only a few people around.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 4

The Florentine road goes through national forest - hence logging trucks. I did not see any.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 3

Needed to double-back to Maydena today - I wanted to get to Wayatinah via the Florentine valley. Not normally a cycle touring route, but it's gonna save me a lot of k's and hills circling back to the highway.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg, Day 2

A long-ish climb over a hill called the Needles, then down a long unsealed road to Lake Pedder's south. I wanted to look at the Western Arthurs, essentially the gateway into Tasmania's wild southwest where there no roads, just walking tracks which they say are not for the inexperienced. Would love to walk it sometime - today I just want a peek.

Roundabout Tasmania: West coast leg day 1.

Due west from Hobart to a campground just outside Mt Field National park. Experienced Tassie's notorious westerlies (near gale headwinds) today. Lucky the road was flat.

It's been a year from the last tour and our saddle butts are again itching to travel. These images are the reasons why we opt to see the world the slow, two-wheeled way.

Leaving our own patch of heaven in Tsuguun Nuur was hard but the excitement of going to the mountains up north is irresistible. Up we go then.

Starting the first leg of the trip tomorrow- Ulaanbaatar to Tsetserleg. Around 500km, we're hoping to reach Tsetserleg in approx 9 days. Still not decided where to from there but seriously considering going north to Khuvsgul Nuur. Will all depend how things go and if there will be enough time.
