Lighthouses are usually named after the places they are built on, but it's the other way around for this gem of a beach in Sorsogon. Parola Beach in Magallanes town, seen in this photo by , is so named because of the lighthouse found atop its hilly shores. This hidden wonder would make the perfect close to a trip to the quaint town known as the site of Ibalon or Ibalong, said to be the first Spanish settlement in the island of Luzon.

Thank you for this, GRID Magazine!

Situated in the southernmost tip of Luzon, the sleepy province of Sorsogon, with its 15 municipalities, has yet to have its time in the spotlight. But it is having its time in the sun.

There is something romantic about waterfalls. The enchanting veil of clear waters gushing from the mountainside makes you wonder: Where did it come from, and where will it go from here? But at the same time is forces you to revel only at its descent, at its moment of suspension. Sorsogon is home to several such spectacles, including Busay Falls, seen in this photo by . Busay is hidden in a forest a short hike from the highway in Guinlajon, Sorsogon City. From Manila, Sorsogon City may be reached by bus from Cubao or Pasay (12 hours) or by plane (one-hour flight and one-hour shuttle) via Legazpi.

On Mondays, the pile of work in front of you for the week seems like a mountain. To remind you of the rewards of climbing that mountain, we're sending you this view from Mt. Pulog (1020 masl) in Sorsogon City's Bacon District, shared with us by . The circular lake at the center is also called Pulog, and is a sight to behold at the end of a four-hour hike. Hikers climbing Mt. Pulog jump off from Barangay Sta. Cruz or San Juan in Bacon, a jeepney ride away from Sorsogon City. If you have time after the climb, we recommend hitting the beaches of Bacon or even Paguriran Island. You may get to Sorsogon City by bus from Cubao or Pasay (12 hours) or by plane via Legazpi (1-hour flight, 1-hour shuttle ride).

There is something romantic about lighthouses. The steadfast watchers revel in isolation, seemingly taking comfort only in the music of waves crashing against the shore. There are two historical lighthouses in Sorsogon: the San Bernardino Island Lighthouse in Bulusan and the Bagatao Island Lighthouse in Magallanes, shown in this photo by . Beyond being romantic spots, these towers play an important role for sea navigators. The Bagatao Island Lighthouse, for instance, marks the entrance to Sorsogon Bay, and helps ships safely maneuver around Ticao Island in Masbate as they head toward the Pacific Ocean.

The City of Sorsogon, the capital of Sorsogon province, is often seen simply as a springboard to beach destinations like Donsol, Gubat, Matnog, or Mount Bulusan and its famed lake. But there is also much to see and do in the only city in Sorsogon. Among the must-try activities is the river cruise along Buhatan River, to which this photo by gives a preview. The trip via the previously overlooked waterway starts at Barangay Buhatan and ends at Sorsogon Bay. If the sunset view it offers is not enough for romance, surely the fireflies that light the riverbanks at night can remedy that. Sorsogon City may be reached by bus, via 12-hour trips from Cubao or Pasay, or by plane, via Legazpi.

This is Subic Beach found in Calintaan Island off the town of Matnog, the southernmost tip of Luzon. It is a gem among beaches in the province of Sorsogon. This photo by shows the long stretch of almost white shore, but a close look at Subic's sand would actually reveal grains of pink. This is why locals also call the beach "Malarosa." From Manila, you may reach Subic Beach by bus. There are direct trips to Matnog from Cubao or Pasay. You may also go by plane via Legazpi, then head to Matnog. Boats docked at the Matnog Port can bring groups of up to 10 people to Subic Beach, which is also a jumpoff point for other destinations such as the Juag Fish Sanctuary. http://ift.tt/228Vuwg

It's almost butanding season! What better time than now to ? Whale sharks, or butanding to Filipinos, as seen in this photo by , visit the waters of Donsol, Sorsogon all year round, but most frequently from February to April. Donsol, once dubbed the "whale shark capital of the world," is also praised for its ethical tourism practices. Unlike other tourist magnets that keep whale sharks baited, in Donsol, you can't feed or even touch the butanding. Trained "butanding interaction officers" take you swimming with the sharks to make sure you keep to those rules. Such practices might mean that seeing a butanding involves some luck, but that only makes the experience more special. From Manila, you may reach Donsol by plane via Legazpi City (45 minutes), where shuttles offer regular trips to the butanding town. You may also go by bus (12 hours), alighting at Legazpi or Sorsogon City, and then taking a shuttle to Donsol. http://ift.tt/1S96KqN

This is the awe-inspiring Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Sorsogon City, the seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Sorsogon. The provincial capital celebrates starting today the Sosogon Festival, but all festivities would have to wait, as a state of calamity is declared in the whole of the province. Today, December 16, also marks the first day of the Misa de Gallo or Christmas novena masses. We hope that your prayers include those who lost loved ones, homes, or livelihoods to Typhoon Nona. http://ift.tt/1NT2kmk

The Capitol Park in Sorsogon City is a wonder to behold during the holiday season. Last year, Christmas trees made of scallop shells (locally known as baluko) lined the park. This year, the grounds facing the stately Provincial Capitol Building features a giant nativity tableau made of coconut shells and other native materials.

TOUCH OF SORSOGON THIS CHRISTMAS. Giant 'Belen' and christmas balls made of coconut shells stand proudly in front of Sorsogon provincial capitol. Tapping local folk's ingenuity, the christmas balls are made of coconut shells expertly formed, and other indigenous materials are used for the decor. PHOTO BY ANGEL AYALA / BICOLTODAY.COM
