Nanay Delia's Farm

Going back to basics is a crucial lesson that the Covid-19 pandemic has give the populace. And basic needs automatically means food sustainability, or agriculture.

At Nanay Delia’s Farm in Barangay Lukay, San Miguel, Leyte, food sustainability goes hand in hand with tourism. Owned and managed by the family of Delia Mercado, it is a great showcase for agriculture-based tourism.

Nanay Delia’s Farm offers room accommodations for families or large groups having retreats or team building sessions. They also have private cottages for individuals craving for serenity.

Aside from a mini zoo, vegetable farms, gardens for orchids and other plants, fish pond, and restaurant offering delectable Filipino and Leyte dishes, visitors can go biking, horseback riding, or swimming at the pool.

It is good venue for the younger generations especially the young children to play outdoors so that in this modern world where they are glued to mobile phones and other gadgets, they will still be able to run around, swim, and even climb trees.

Nanay Delia’s Farm is easily accessible. It is located along the national highway in San Miguel on the way to Tacloban City, the provincial capital of Leyte.

BINTE FALLS

There’s nothing more satisfying for barkadas who are young and free and full of energy than to embark on a trip together to make memories that would last for a lifetime.

In San Miguel, Leyte, there is one such adventure that would surely bring friends closer to nature, and to each other. This would be a day’s arduous yet fulfilling trip to Sitio Malaihao, Barangay Bahay where the highest waterfalls in this part of the island could be found.

The hike is two hours passing by muddy roads, vast green fields, hills, and a trek on the river. The visual treat is even made more beautiful and poetic with an encounter with local flora and fauna. Imagine listening to the sound of crickets, the singing of the birds, and seeing dragonflies and other scenes no longer available in busy urban centers.

The Binte waterfalls is multi-level and because the place is pristine and undeveloped, we could say the trip is not for the faint of heart as it entails climbing up and down slopes. For those who dare a most challenging trail, however, the sight of thick foliage, tall trees, and the sound of the waterfalls is a prize worth all the hassle.

Visit Binte Falls now and prepare for an awe-inspiring sight of a natural wonder.

LIPASAN FALLS

One of nature’s gifts that give people of San Miguel a sense of pride of place is the Lipasan Falls located in barangay Pinarigusan.

A trail that starts near the Pinarigusan Elementary School will take visitors through a 15-minute hike to the cool and refreshing Lipasan waterfalls. The trail snakes its way through the river tributary crisscrossing the land, so visitors will have the experience of wading in ankle-deep, free flowing water in some parts of the journey.

The walk to the falls is in itself a rural adventure. It’s another fun story when you arrive at the waterfalls. You can then let all your senses embrace the wonder of nature, just as you let nature embrace you in the coolness of its being.

And of course, letting the water drop on your back for a soothing massage is an experience like no other.

The area is untouched by development, it is still pure and serene.

No entrance fee is collected.

BATHAN FESTIVAL

Annual fiestas in Philippine towns are often an interesting blend of deeply religious activities like processions, Pontifical mass, and some cultural activities to add more fun, entertainment and colors such as carnivals, beauty pageants, and festivals.
While other town festivals are anchored on agricultural products and delicacies, here in San Miguel, the festival depicts a folktale handed down from generation to generation. The Bathan festival is dance-play about the legend of a woman named Bathan who was kidnapped by Moro raiders, taken to Sulu, yet returned through the help of a crocodile named Bela.
The Bathan Festival traces its history to a playground demonstration at the San Miguel Central School during the fiesta of 1967. Teacher Corazon B. Babiano initiated the presentation, with Jenny Lind N. Balais as the first Bathan. Eight years later or in 1975, the presentation resurfaced in the form of a play that teachers and students performed for the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the municipality. The play, based on the legend of Bathan and titled “Ang Istorya ni Bathan” was written and directed by elementary school teacher Yolanda P. de Veyra with Edita B. Poblete taking the lead role.
However, it was only in 1996 that the play evolved and was officially organized into a municipal festival for San Miguel. This was prodded by a directive from the Department of Tourism for all Leyte towns to prepare a festival that will be presented in Ormoc City for the 1st Kasadyaan Festival on May 11 and 12, 1996 which was a project of then governor Remedios Petilla. A 257-strong contingent from San Miguel composed of dancers, musicians and propsmen who were students from all levels was sent to Ormoc City that year, led by Miss Erhma P. de Veyra as Bathan and Yolanda P. de Veyra as director. The Bathan Festival, with an allocation of P150,000, clinched the fifth place from among the nine contingents that came from Baybay, Carigara, Calubian, Dulag, Hilongos, Inopacan, La Paz, and Tanawan.
Since then, the Bathan Festival became an annual event for the fiesta in San Miguel every September, participated in by contingents from different barangays and schools. People look forward to the festival especially the street dancing which always fill the town with dancers in colorful props and costumes.
