Experience Palawan in Cagayan

Most of the time, when people hear the term “underground river”, Palawan is the first thing that comes to their minds. The Puerto Princesa Underground River which is now hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World is the most prominent underground river not just here in the Philippines but also in the world.

But what most people do not know is we also have our own version of the said highly-acclaimed subterranean river here in Cagayan Valley – our very own Duba Cave and Underground River found in Sitio San Miguel, Baggao.

Despite the fear brought by communist activities in the municipality, which is mainly why the cave is not yet that known to other people, many tourists still choose to brave the travel to the town just to witness the beauty of Duba.

A narrow lagoon that looks like a sump which is believed to be the underground connection to the river is what you have to venture for 36 meters to get to the entrance of the cave.

Identical to the one in Puerto Princesa, crystal-clear waters make the Duba Underground River a perfect place for swimming and boating. Although there are passages without handholds that require visitors to just swim or float with personal floatation devices (pfd) for their safety.

Icicle-shaped stalactites and dripping stalagmites penetrated by the rays of the sun over a peeping cove would also intensify the delight of tourists passing the river.

If you have already made it this far to the cave, you are advised to stay to wait for dusk to come to witness the circadian flight of the bats that the place is most famous for.

A dinner made up of Cagayan delicacies at the Country Inn Hotel and Restaurant of San Jose would be the nicest way to conclude your detour. And there you go, a breath of Palawan in Cagayan for a cheaper price but definitely not a cheaper experience.
