Visit the antique capital of Angkor Thom (12 century): the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk, the Bayon Temple, unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara, the Phimeanakas, the Royal Enclosure, the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the L***r King. Visit to Ta Prohm, one of the area’s most beautiful temples. Ta Prohm has been relatively touched since it was discovered and retains much of its mystery, and the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor: Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are emblazoned on the Cambodian flag and the 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. I am grateful to have experienced and observed the rich culture of various tribes, gaining a deeper understanding of their traditions. Beyond the typical attractions of places, cuisine, and economic opportunities, I find immense value in preserving the cultural sensitivity, traits, and values of the Filipino people, which are unfortunately fading.

Among the diverse groups, the Bagobo stand out as one of the largest subgroups, encompassing Tagabawa, Klata or Guiangan, and the Ovu. Their territory spans from Davao Gulf to Mt. Apo, traditionally governed by chieftains (matanum), a council of elders (magani), and mabalian, female shamans.

A highlight of my cultural exploration was visiting the Bagobo Tagabawa in Brgy Upper Bitaug, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, as part of an itinerary thoughtfully crafted by the Tourism Promotions Board.

This experience has broadened my understanding of cultural sensitivity, inspiring me to incorporate it into my designed itineraries for guests and, importantly, for students.
