TARGET DATES:
• The BIA is expected to be technically operational for day operations by 7 October 2021, and to be night-rated by 4 November 2021.
• Contractors of the airport project have committed to complete all civil works under their respective contracts by 30 August 2021.
PREPARATIONS: Tomorrow, July 30, is the schedule of the first commercial flight test wherein DOTr Secretary Art Tugade and 50 other passengers from NCR will land directly in Bicol International Airport. Earlier, July 27-28, flight checks using Pilatus aircraft were made by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Senior high officials of the national government made a series of site inspection (latest was May 13) to ensure 24/7 construction and project completion before the year ends.
SIZE: The runway has a length of 2.5 kilometers (2500m x 45m). Seventeen (17) buildings including the 2-storey (3,680 sqm floor) Passenger Terminal Building were built inside the 148-hectare airport complex.
SAFETY & DURABILITY: The buildings in BIA are designed to be more typhoon resilient. It is located on a plateau in Daraga which is flood free and 15 kilometers away from Mayon Volcano replacing the Legazpi Airport which is 12 kilometers from the volcano.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES: 755 people were employed during the construction and 1,100 permanent positions are being filled up for the operation of BIA.
PASSENGER VOLUME: The "Most Scenic Gateway in the Philippines" is expected to boost air traffic in Bicol Region and accommodate a total of 2 Million passengers annually.
TIMELINE: The pre-feasibility study for the BIA started way back in 1996 and the Notice to Proceed was given in 2003. BIA initial construction in 2008. Development works were uncompleted until 2012. President Rodrigo Duterte personally made the groundbreaking of the BIA on December 8, 2016. Since then, full blast construction began wherein the airport's Package 2A (runway) continued and Package 2B (Terminal & 17 building facilities) only started. BIA as one of he top priority infrastructure projects under the "Build Build Build" Program. All civil works to be completed on August 30, 2021. Inauguration and operation of Bicol International Airport this coming October 7, 2021.
UPCOMING DEVELOPMENT: More investment, tourists, business and job opportunities in Albay and Bicol. The new Legazpi PNR Train Station and Depot will be built also just few meters away from BIA. The Cityhood of Daraga. The re-Development of the soon-to be-vacated Legazpi Airport (74 hectares) into another central business district of Legazpi City.
