Myth: You waste more gas turning on a car than idling.

Fact: Back in the day when most cars had carburetors to mix fuel and air for the engine to use, then this notion could count for something. However, with today’s technology and through fuel injection, ignition occurs without having to expend any more fuel than what is needed to keep the car idling. Want to really save on gas? If your car sits for more than 30 seconds, turn it off.

Myth: A bullet to the gas tank will cause the car to explode.

Fact: Normal bullets won’t cause a gasoline tank to ignite or explode. But there’s an exception, especial type of bullet called a tracer round can potentially cause a fire — if it ignites with air friction after being shot from a far enough distance. Even then, the chances of an explosion are pretty slim unless the tank is already heavily damaged by multiple tracer rounds. So, in reality, it’s pretty unlikely that a single bullet will turn a car into a fiery wreck like in the movies.

However, research has shown that your vehicle would actually become less fuel-efficient instead. This is caused by the added resistance from the grime sitting on top of your vehicle surface. The dirt may also add weight to your vehicle, thus worsening its fuel efficiency.
