Tiny Dominica lies in the eastern Caribbean and is one of the world’s least-visited places. In 2017, it was wrecked by Hurricane Maria, but has worked hard to recover. With sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, rocky landscapes and huge volcanoes, the island also attracts responsible holidaymakers, thanks to its mission to become the first climate-resilient country in the world. Luxury travellers will like the newly opened five-star Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski, while scuba fans should visit in July for a festival dedicated entirely to diving. Despite its tiny size, Georgia is home to no less than 12 different climate zones, making it one of the most ecologically diverse destinations in the world. With direct flights available from Dubai to Tbilisi, the country is within easy reach and has been busy remodelling itself. Gone are the former Soviet spaces and abandoned buildings; instead you’ll find new boutique hotels, art galleries and restaurants. Orbeliani Square, the capital’s main artery, reopened last year after two years and millions of dirhams’ worth of renovation work; the city also has two new pedestrianised zones.

Fresh from its Olympic and Paralympic success, Japan is a dream holiday destination that should be firmly on your list for 2022. This year, however, it's time to go beyond Tokyo and explore the country's rural side. Japan's newest bullet train route, Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, is set to open between Nagasaki and Saga in autumn 2022. This will help speed up Nagasaki connections from the current Kyushu bullet train line that comes into Fukuoka from Tokyo.

The trains themselves will be called kamome meaning 'seagull,' following the popularity of lockdown video game franchise, Ghost of Tsushima, which is set on the stunning archipelagos surrounding the city of Nagasaki. Over the next decade, there will also be new bullet train lines joining Tokyo directly to traditional Fukui, snowy Sapporo and passing through the Nakasendo walking trails of the Kiso Valley. Japan is set to be one of the biggest rail holiday destinations of the future...

If ever there was a year to visit the Netherlands, it's 2022 when the Floriade floral spectacle takes place, with its timely eco-theme of ‘growing green cities’. Held every 10 years, the Floriade Expo returns for six months from April to October and will bring an array of unique and fascinating exhibitions to Almere, near Amsterdam.

With a focus on imagining sustainable, city living for the future, you can expect inspiring gardens, workshops and exhibitions mixed with striking attractions and tasting sessions. The 150-acre site is also where 300 eco-homes have been built, with plans for the area to be turned into a green residential neighbourhood of 660 homes, so if you're after a sustainably-focused holiday destination for 2022, Holland is the place worth considering.

From major events taking place, to new flight routes opening up beautiful places and highly anticipated movie releases bringing Hollywood-worthy locations to our holiday wish lists, there are many reasons to get excited about travelling in 2022.

In sport, the FIFA World Cup in Qatar will put the Middle Eastern country under the spotlight - but with its ultra-modern architecture influenced by Islamic design and thriving arts and culture scene, you might wish to discover the destination before the football crowds arrive.

Closer to home, Holland will host the magnificent Floriade Expo. With its timely eco-theme of ‘growing green cities’ and fascinating floral exhibitions, we'll have six months to soak up the horticultural marvels at this once-in-a-decade attraction.

For beach-lovers, one classic Caribbean island has become easier to reach from the UK with a new flight route from Virgin Atlantic that winter sun fans will appreciate. In fact, there are two Caribbean beauty spots on our radar for 2022.

When it comes to hopping over to the continent for a city break, a new European Capital of Culture offers a photogenic destination you might have previously overlooked. Its tree-lined promenades and historic architecture are worth the low-cost flight.

Paris, Rome, Barcelona... Europe's cities are bucket list destinations, and rightly so. But the continent's small towns are a dream, too, with all the beautiful architecture and much of the culture you'll find in the big hitters, only with fewer crowds to share them with.
Here are some of the prettiest small towns across Europe, from humble fishing towns to hilltop medieval power bases.

Way up high – above the sky-blue fjord, the mountain lake, the evergreen trees and the escarpment – is a natural rock platform, rectangular in shape, raggedy in edge and made as if by a Norse God.

The path to get there narrows from a broad plateau to an exposed extremity leading to an obvious, yet vertiginous, viewpoint that feels as if it could collapse at any moment. I gawped at the sight. Don't look down, my inner voice said. Don't fall off.

"This view is insane!" someone shouted from behind me. I turned to greet the only other person on the cliff ledge, as a brutal wind threatened to blow us both clean off into the Lysefjord, some 600m below. It was a cold weekday in September and we were strangely alone.

Despite ranking as the smallest continent in terms of size, Europe is arguably the most adventurous and historic continent on earth. Besides the history, the continent is also blessed with lots of beautiful places which feature scenic views, rich culture, and mesmerizing sky colors. These cities, in particular, are so beautiful, they make us want to pack our bags and get on the next flight.

The rolling, vineyard-covered hills on the Italian border, the elegant and eco-friendly capital city of Ljubljana, the perfect tranquility of Lake Bled, the snowy valleys in Triglav National Park and the warm waters along the Adriatic coastline — the nation definitely punches way above its weight.

Choosing your own adventure

To ensure guests get the most out of their Galápagos experience, Lindblad offers meaningful options, giving you the opportunity to choose how you explore. Short on time? Choose the action-packed week aboard the 48-guest, yacht-scaled National Geographic Islander and, perhaps, add a three-day, post-voyage cultural experience in the Andes of Ecuador. Or choose the classic, 10-day expedition aboard the 96-guest National Geographic Endeavour II or a 16-day Galápagos and Peru trip combining the voyage with an exploration of Machu Picchu and the Land of the Inca.

No matter which Lindblad-National Geographic expedition you choose, you’ll have daily opportunities to customize your experience. Elect to join the naturalist of your choosing, each with their own specialties and interests. Join a long hike, opt for yoga on the beach before breakfast, or spend the morning on a photography walk with a certified photo instructor. Opportunities to go paddling and kayaking are also available in select sites.

A road trip in Burgundy reveals far more than fine wine
Find holy history and heavenly vintages in the northern reaches of this celebrated French wine-making region.
Visiting Burgundy’s vineyards is easy: Dijon, the city at the heart of the area, is just a 90-minute train ride from Paris. But the French region’s scenic, sensory charms begin a long way north of the Côte d’Or, or “Golden Slope”—and the road is paved with stories.
The monks who first tended Burgundy’s vines were focused not on the pleasures of the table but on the immortality of the soul. If sacramental wine was to become the blood of Christ during mass, why not make it transcendentally delicious? The landscape was molded in the image of the church and well-marked pilgrimage routes still characterize the region.

COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM

Sunlight filters into the rotunda at Nashville's Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Honoring the country music genre's roots and talent, the museum's exhibits and collections include career retrospectives, galleries, and spotlights. An exhibit opening August 29 will celebrate the 25-year career of country singer Alan Jackson. Named the museum's 2014 artist-in-residence, Jackson will perform at its CMA Theater during two dates in October.
Nashville’s music scene
America’s Music City lives up to its name with world-class venues, foot-stomping honky-tonks, and a southern country flare served with generous helpings of Americana.

Discover the art behind Nashville's signature sound
In Music City, country music and old-school letterpress design have long harmonized. On an early Sunday morning in January, Nashville’s Lower Broadway—“Lower Broad” to locals—looks like the day after a zombie apocalypse.

Doors all along the street are now shut beneath unlit neon signs, more than a few in the shape of guitars. Some of the best but lesser known country musicians played these venues last night in the coveted after-10 p.m. Saturday slot. But, as is increasingly the case, many went unnoticed among the growing number of raucous bachelorette parties and conventiongoers. Nashville is booming; about a hundred people a day are said to move to this iconic Tennessee city, and the visitor count is approaching 15 million annually, with record increases year after year.

In L.A.’s Koreatown, travelers find a ‘second Seoul’
Once a cultural way station for immigrants, this ever-evolving neighborhood offers an authentic taste of Korean culture.
This isn’t the Koreatown of my childhood.

I’m in the lobby of the Line LA hotel, where a deejay spins hip-hop, a trendy crowd samples vegan nachos, and more than a few are sipping “Purple Haze” cocktails.

Against the din, a concierge quietly hands me a slip of paper that reads “BCD Tofu.” It’s not the password to the hotel’s Wifi or its speakeasy. Instead, it’s the name of a long-standing, late-night Korean restaurant serving comfort in the form of spicy soondubu chigae tofu stew.
