Myth: Paint protection causes more harm than good to your car.

Fact: Some vehicle owners looking to protect their paint job might opt to get a layer of paint protection applied to their vehicle exterior. The myth revolves around the idea that the glue used to apply this layer will damage the paint job when taken off. But it’s really about the degree of workmanship here. Any job done on your vehicle comes with the risk of it getting damaged if the workers are incompetent. So no, this myth should not be taken as the gospel truth.

Myth: Dirty cars are more fuel-efficient.

Fact: The rationale is that dirt and grime will cause the dimple effect like those you see on golf balls, making it more aerodynamic. However, research has shown that your vehicle would actually become less fuel-efficient instead. This is caused by the added resistance from the grime sitting on top of your vehicle surface. The dirt may also add weight to your vehicle, thus worsening its fuel efficiency.

Fact: Airbags deploy incredibly fast, at speeds of up to 200 MPH, and typically inflate within 40 milliseconds after a collision. They are designed to activate during moderate to severe crashes, generally when the impact speed is 8 to 14 MPH or higher, depending on the specific vehicle and airbag system. This rapid deployment helps cushion and protect occupants, reducing the risk of serious injury by distributing the force of impact over a larger area of the body.

Myth: Cellphone use at the pump can trigger an explosion.

Fact: Back when cell phones, and then smartphones, were brand-new, some people had the idea that wireless signals could spark and ignite fuel vapors, resulting in an explosion at the pump. However, all scientific testing has shown this to be false and there have been absolutely no recorded incidents where this type of accident has occurred.

Myth: If regular-grade fuel is good, premium fuel must be better.

Fact: Most vehicles are designed to run just fine on regular-grade (87 octane) gasoline, and filling up with a higher grade is a waste of money. “A higher octane number doesn’t mean that your vehicle will perform better,” said John Ibbotson, chief mechanic for Consumer Reports. “It simply means that it’s more resistant to engine knocking or pinging.” What you should do instead is use the octane grade that’s recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Myth: The airport is the best place to convert currency.

Fact: This travel myth can cost you—literally. Almost all currency exchange opportunities at airports offer a consumer rate of exchange—calling it "no fee" obscures the fact that the fee's already built in. Most banks allow you to use your debit card while abroad, giving you access to the bank rate of exchange that's roughly 10 percent better. You'll pay a fee for the transaction, but if you take your cash in one big grab, the savings can be tremendous. If you're a planner, you can also go into your bank and get foreign money at least a week in advance, often with no fee at all.

Myth: You should inflate your tires to the tire pressure listed on the sidewall.

Fact: A single tire make, model, and size can be used on several different types of vehicles of varying weights and requirement. The number on the sidewall is a max inflation pressure for the tire, not the car. Instead of looking at the tire, look at the tire information sticker on the driver's door jam, or in your owner's manual. The vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure is optimized for safety, traction, and fuel efficiency in the specific vehicle you are driving.

Myth: Using higher octane fuel than your intended fuel ‘cleans’ the engine.

Fact: There is a common misconception that you can cleanse your engine by filling up with a higher octane fuel once in a while. The evidence just isn’t there to support this, and of course, if your manufacturer recommends using premium fuels – you should just use that. The reason why it’s not a good idea is that higher octane fuels (like 98RON) can cope with a certain level of compression from the engine and messing around with this can cause some mild chaos in your engine – resulting in nasty banging sounds.

Myth: Engine oil needs to be changed every 5,000 kilometers.

Fact: Another case of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”, even though it won’t hurt your car if you change its oil every few months, it isn't going to make any difference either. Back when older engine oils were prone to sludge and build-up, it was a good idea to change the oil every few thousand kilometers to prevent damaging the engine. Newer oils with improved viscosities, additives, coupled with newer engines over the years, have made the intervals much longer in reality. A good ballpark figure would be 15,000 to 20,000 kilometers for every oil change, but you should consult your car’s owner’s manual to be absolutely sure. At the minimum, if your car doesn't travel long distances often or sits in the garage for most of the year, have its oil changed once every year to prevent the buildup of broken-down oil and sludge.
