DID YOU KNOW? ๐Ÿค”

The Black Nazarene (formally Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno), whose Traslacion we commemorate every January 9, has one of the largest devotions in the country. This procession is attended by millions of believers each year.

The venerated image arrived in Manila from Mexico during the 17th century. While many believe its dark color is due to fire damage, it was actually carved from mesquite wood, a naturally dark-colored wood.

The procession symbolizes the transfer of the image from the San Nicolas Church in Intramuros to Quiapo Church sometime between 1767 to 1787. The present-day procession began in 2006 and the route was institutionalized in 2009.

In celebration of ๐ˆ๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐ž๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐ž๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž'๐ฌ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก, we honor the rich cultural heritage of Palawanโ€™s indigenous communities by sharing insights into the ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž, one of the Tagbanua's most significant traditions.

Deeply rooted in respect for nature and ancestral spirits, ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž is a sacred ritual conducted by a ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘›, a traditional healer and spiritual leader within the community. The ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘› acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, facilitating the connection between the living and their ancestors, deities, and nature. Through ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž, they mediate between the living and the dead and share messages of goodwill and moral guidance, bringing the wisdom of ancestors into the lives of the living.

The ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž serves multiple purposes: it is performed during times of sickness, death, or natural calamities, as well as during periods of prosperity to express gratitude. For the Tagbanua, these ceremonies and offerings to appease spirits and deities have maintained the communityโ€™s harmony with the environment. Their deep spiritual beliefs and respect for nature have helped them ensure sustainable resources for generations, maintaining a lifestyle in tune with the natural cycles.

Highlighted in this ritual are the ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘‘ (rice wine) and the traditional ๐‘˜๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”๐‘–๐‘› (swidden) farming. It also highlights the invocation of ๐ท๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž ๐‘˜๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐ด๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘›, a deity called upon at the end of the wet season to bring the ๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘›, the hot and dry northeast wind. This wind is essential for burning clearings in preparation for planting. Yet, it is also a time for caution, as the ๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘› is believed to carry ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘˜๐‘Ž๐‘ spirits, which bring epidemic diseases to Earth. During bountiful harvests, the Tagbanua people offer their gratitude to ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘”๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘Ž, a powerful deity, through the ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž, thanking him for their prosperity. Following the rice harvest and continuing until the new clearings are made, the ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ฆ๐‘Ž๐‘› performs a series of three ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž ceremonies for ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘”๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘Ž. This ritual not only celebrates abundance but also reinforces their connection to the spiritual world, creating a cycle of respect and harmony that sustains the Tagbanuaโ€™s way of life.

The ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ž is a beautiful testament to the Tagbanuaโ€™s cultural heritage and environmental mindfulness, preserving their sacred traditions and maintaining balance in their communities. Let us honor and respect this tradition, recognizing it as part of the profound legacy of the indigenous people of Palawan.

โ€œI can sum up the state of the nation in two words, free and hopeful. We are free because we decided collectively to be free. Nothing could stand in the way of our freedom thereafter.
