Imagine a destination where salt is more than just a seasoning on your table—it’s a lens through which you discover rich cultural traditions and unexpected beauty. For hundreds of years, salt has been a source of wonder and value, shaping the civilization and economy of Pasuquin, a coastal town in Ilocos Norte, Philippines.

A salt industry developed alongside fishing in the coastal barrios, possibly giving the town its name: "Pasuquin" from *paasokan*, meaning a smoky place, referring to the brine cooking process.

Renowned for its traditional salt-making, Pasuquin preserves a centuries-old craft passed down through generations. This distinctive method, known as asin ti Pasuquin (Pasuquin salt), not only provides a livelihood for the locals but also draws tourists eager to learn about the salt-making process and its history, the Ilocano way.

All Saint’s Day originated from the ancient tradition of honoring the martyrs of Christianity, with the growing number of persecuted martyrs grew, the church instituted a commemoration of their faith. Having Nov 1 as the official date of All Saint’s Day. Also called All Hallows Tide, All Hallows’ Day. Also, a celebration of all Christian saints, known or unknown, canonized or beatified, but more particularly those who have no special feast days of their own. In many countries, including the Philippines, All Saints’ Day is not only for remembering the saints, but also for honoring and paying respects to departed relatives and friends, through prayers, floral and food offerings, vigil, and lighting of candles at gravesites. For Catholics, it is a holy day of obligation, as they go to Mass and participate in ceremonies for the dead.

Traditions & beliefs that was celebrated hundred years ago since, so as the ever-changing different ways it is being celebrated. Philippines having almost 123 indigenous tribes, religions. cultures, beliefs on how they pay their respect to their dearly departed. from the present going back to the days of bygone when our ancestors started some.

In the Philippines, Christians believes in honoring & remembering the memories with a 3day to 1 Week funeral before sending to the grave for their final resting place. The Chinese, almost the same together with it burning some replicas of earthy things such as house cars, paper money so they have something on the other life and not to be deprived still even when crossing over.

The Ifugao’s, who believed it is much better to be near and still be together with them, burying their dearly departed at the back of their house. Or anywhere they so desire, along the road, top of the mountain. The Igorot on the other hand have different beliefs, they light the modern graves with firewood’s so it will keep them warm in the cold mountains. not to mention firewood’s last longer than candles. Igorot also consider death as sacred so as the burial, rituals are being done from the time of death, the preparation of the body, the burial site may its e inside the cave or above the limestone up above and close to the skies. With reasons valid in their belief and traditions.

Some rituals, beliefs traditions from the past to now

Libingan sa Kweba or cave burial. They believe that the deceased should be buried in a cave to protect the spirit from harm. "Libingan sa Tanawin" or mountain burial. They bury their dead in the mountains, facing the sunrise, to guide the spirit to the afterlife. Traditional Burial Practices:
Water Burial, in some coastal areas, the deceased is buried at sea, with the body wrapped in a blanket or placed in a wooden coffin.

In the olden days, especially when the time of the Spanish Burial in church-run cemeteries or memorial parks. Who some believes that it is much better to be buried inside the church as instead of just visiting them once a year, you get to visit them often but wait as they say only those who have money and a cash to donate to the church can be buried inside. Though no records or writing. just take a look at the walls of San Agustin Church in Intramuros.

Lastly, Cremation is becoming more common, especially in urban areas. These burial customs in Palawan reflect the rich cultural diversity and traditions of the indigenous communities and the blending of influences from other cultures also the practicality & convenience of it. Both before and after.

Whichever, however we do it, the most important thing from it is the celebration of the lie, faith they once had & the memories and the respect & prayers given, simple one or ritual saying in a different way, languages. I am very sure they are all smiling down on us sending the hugs and love.
