As Ogtong, the town was merely a visita of the Bantayan Parish.
A persistent petition by its natives in 1871 eventually paid off, earning for it its own township after then Spanish Governor Izquierdo’s approval on Oct. 3, 1872.
Along with it, Ogtong was inaugurated with the name Santa Fe, after a town in Spain.
Ten years later, Gov. Izquierdo formally issued a decree on March 29, 1881 facilitating the establishment of Santa Fe as a separate parish. The following month, a bishop of Cebu, Fray Benito Romero de Madridejos, officially declared it a parish on April 7, 1881.
