Davao Oriental Governor Corazon "Cora" Nuñez-Malanyaon passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 28, 2023. She was 73.
This was confirmed by Davao Oriental vice governor Niño Uy, in a Facebook live broadcast Wednesday evening, on the official page of the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental.
Uy said the family informed them about the governor’s death on Wednesday afternoon, around 3:50 p.m. The cause of death, however, was not specified.
Since 2001, Malanyaon has served the province as first district representative (2001 - 2007; 2016 -2022) and governor (2007 - 2016; 2022 - present). She started her political career when she was appointed as an OIC councilor of Davao City in 1986 to 1987. She was then duly elected as number one Davao City Councilor from 1988 to 1992.
She is known for her strong political will, tourism initiatives, and numerous infrastructure projects that has helped Davao Oriental progress to what it is today.
The Certified Public Accountant-lawyer governor was born on August 22, 1949 and grew up in Cateel town before she pursued higher education at the Ateneo de Davao University as a public accountant and a lawyer.
Malanyaon is supposed to lead the 56th founding anniversary celebration of the province on July 1.
The family and the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental have yet to release details of her wake. It will be shared to the public once available.
