Jik's Happy Feet - A Boholanang Lakwatsera's Journey This will encourage us to travel regardless the rate of our salaries and background. "Boholana" means a woman from Bohol.

And "Lakwatsera" is the Filipino word for someone who is always on the go and traveling.

Affordable trip to try outside of PH, not needing a visa.
Number 1: Hongkong

Coming from an island province of Bohol, I noticed that it took me a long time to realize that we can afford to travel too. In fact with that realization, my desire to share my experience was born.

What happened in the past weeks, definitely sent shivers down our spine. With the news of tragic flights, life can easily be taken in a blink of an eye. Nevertheless, this got me thinking, too. How life can be so unpredictable, that even after your happiest moment of travel, it can end that way. 🥺

You may think, it is untimely and irrelevant after all the fear it gave you.
But if it is something you are longing to do, don't let fear stop you from turning your plans into reality.

One of the places to travel that I can vouch for being affordable if you are a first-time Filipino traveler is Hongkong. Not only was it affordable if you book months before or with PisoSale, it is also easier to convince Immigration Officers that you'll be there for leisure if you have a full-time work in the Philippines.

The travel was not even thought of, like most people do. When my colleague said “Hey Ate, there’s a promo for Hongkong”. I just told her right away, “Okay, book me!” LOL 🤣

I used a colleague's digital camera, my backpack was borrowed from another male colleague and another leather bag was given to me by one of our Kiva Fellow. You see, when I travel, I don't care about OOTD 🤣

One of my angels during the travel was meeting a woman while still at the plane. She's a Filipina too, who has been married to a man from Hongkong and she has been living there for a long time.
Meeting her was such a relief because we talked a lot and she was worried about me, being a woman, a solo traveler, arriving in a foreign place at 4AM.
She orients me on safety and what bus to take in order to reach my Wang Fat Hostel in Causeway Bay. While for most people, being away in such a place will cause them to panic, it has the opposite effect on me - I WAS ECSTATIC! 😍

So I arrived safely at my hostel at almost 4AM, ealier than expected to the surprise of the hostel owner 😅 For affordability, I chose a dormitory-type hostel. There, I met a solo traveler from Malaysia, Poland and India. I even took trips with them to different places.
I was able to check one of my simple dreams: to ride a double-decker bus in Hongkong! Haha! 😆

Though for some people, Hongkong is expensive, I believed it depends on your itinerary. I chose not to go to the usual spots like Disneyland and Oceanpark since I'm not fond of crowded places and I can appreciate those places if I'm with a child. When you are on your own, it is easier to travel, on a budget.

I spent my birthday having lunch at a Prince Building, where a nice restaurant has inviting dishes for lunch. When I seated, I can easily hear the familiar chitchats of our fellow Kababayans. One of those I met was Jubelyn, my sangay from Davao, it was a Sunday, so she decided to join me on my trip. She accompanied me to Victoria’s peak, offering to be my photographer and even told me to have another route on our way back to downtown so we can save. Instead of taking the tram back going down from the mountain, we decided to just take the bus that brought us back to downtown Hongkong. Until this time, the friendship remains. Thanks, Ngay! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

One of the perks of traveling to Hongkong, is the chance to take a ferry to Macau. Thankfully, I have Nang Nita (my mother's friend) who showed me around the Casino area (Casino Lisboa), and that made it more memorable. Sige mig kuha adtong pagkaon na libre bisan wala miy sugal na giapilan. Sige lang kog agik ik ug katawa 😂
One of the foods that I love in Macau was the egg tart. It was soooo good, I'm still dreaming of it, until this time 👍

My round-trip plane ticket to Hongkong (Cebu to Hongkong) was Php5776.38 and my hostel was Php3,202.50.

Do I have plans of going back to Hongkong? Maybe!
With the kids, it would be more fun too.
Or if my sister Dory Lemetares ganahan jud moadto, unya magpa-uban. Pwede ra pod siguro 😉

For this year and the years to come, don't fear rule your hearts.
Who knows, this can be the year that you can make your travel plans come true.

This travel to Hongkong and Macau was many years ago. My
second trip abroad - June 2012.

I am 12 days late, but just the same, "Happy New Year!" 🥳

Since July of 2024 up to the present, I never had the chance to get a good rest.
"Rest" for me is not just having a good night sleep. But also a new sight to see that entertains not just my eyes but my soul, too.
Looking after elderly parents, two kids and now four dogs, is not for everyone. LOL. 😅

It has always been my life's mantra to do something, if something is OFF.
I planned this to happen last December. I finally had the chance to do it.
As a Boholona, I always thought I have seen enough of my province, but no, every other town seems to offer a different type of beauty in its beaches.

I got what I long for:
- seeing coconut trees full of fruits, from our hotel balcony
- a morning walk that satisfied my soul, the place was calm, not touristy
- we found a hammock, talk to a local resident
- de-stressed by friendly dogs roaming around
- we found rocks, small crabs, and mangrove trees that seem to stretch forever
- a grayish sand
- and a beach where you can be worry-free the whole day because it is just low tide from morning to early evening, something a parent would want if kids don't know how to swim
- young ladies playing volleyball
- and a good night sleep from 8PM to 5AM

I thank God for this moment I have had in Villalimpia, Loay, Bohol.

Traveling with kids these days, is hard, but POSSIBLE.
So, don't let it stop you :)

Carpe Diem ~

TEN RULES TO FOLLOW:

1) Life waits for nobody. Get up every day and keep pushing through, no matter what.
2) Make sure you take good care of yourself. If something happens to you. The world will move on. And you will fall behind.
3) If you don’t work to build your dream life, someone will hire you to build theirs.
4) Work in silence. Celebrate in private. People love to ruin things.
5) Don’t regret your past. Just learn from it and move on.
6) No one cares. Work harder to become better each day.
7) Ignore advice from anyone who does not live the life you wanted to live.
8) Rule over your emotions. The calm mind can handle any situation.
9) If you find someone better than you, don’t hate. Ask them for advice and cooperate with them.
10) You are truly at peace with yourself, when you mind your own business.

Mahal ang mobyahe? Yes, tinood.

Pero mahal man pod ang mopalit ug bag-o nga Iphone, sneakers, ug jeans.

Pero if ikaw ang tawo nga gusto gyud unta mobyahe kay ganahan ka ug travel. Then as early as now, look for a job that will help you achieve it, for free.

Community development work will bring you to your dreams. I have been blessed to experience those years, to the point nga gusto na nako ipasa sa uban.

Ang makalipay lang is that, I am happy to travel with someone, but I can still be happy traveling alone.
This is one of those days. In Palawan, while visiting our client and the place was close to the beach :)

And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity, and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end. ~ Pico Iyer.

I have read about this today and I can agree that this is better. So, puhon ;)

Buy land in secret.
Build the house in secret.
Then do the house warming party with publicity.
Let your haters only see your reality, never your vision, or you will have division.
In a game of chess, you don't speak. You just act.
The only time that you ever speak when playing chess is to say checkmate.
Life is like chess.
Don't broadcast your intentions. Act quietly.
Keep achieving. Your achievements are your checkmate.

in Singapore ~

My trip to Singapore was born out of a rebellious spirit.
I was already living in Luzon for 8 years. Six was spent in Laguna, and almost two years in Paranaque.

I was 29 years old, tired of being a bread winner for almost a decade. I have been living in Paranaque for almost two years, call center-hopping and was already working at a Franchising company when I decided to go to Singapore.

I sent a message to a friend Jen who has been living in SG for quite a while, and I asked her for some details and information on how to be a tourist in Singapore.

My flight was through Zest Air, I tendered my resignation so I can come to SG. My friend even advised me not to resign yet. But I did not listen to her (I was stubborn!) 😉
I left and took my flight with very little money in my hand, and a hostel booking.

Social media was not as famous as it is now. It was the early year of Facebook and I only log at FB like once a month. I don’t own a smartphone, I did not even have a camera with me when I went there.
Looking back now on how I navigate my travel, and how I did it, I would be a likely target for Immigration Officer’s intense questioning. LOL. 🤣
I have even stepped on Johor Bahru, for just a few days. This place is already a part of Malaysia.
A stamp on your passport outside of Singapore will increase your days of stay to SG upon re-entry.

Now I realize, there is so much in Singapore that I haven’t seen. I was only able to experience the SMRT, Orchard (where I have so many funny experiences), some malls, Marina Bay, and Merlion.

My sisters and I plan to cross to Singapore last June while in Malaysia. However, due to our travel time from Cameron Highlands, we need to recover physically and give Kuala Lumpur enough time to enjoy it.

Until next time Singapore, when the time is right I hope to be delighted with what’s new with you from many years ago 😉
