Markhor is Pakistan’s national animal, and every time it is hunted, whether officially or illegally, it makes headlines.

Under the 2021-22 trophy hunting programme, two foreign nationals hunted two of the highest-rated Astore markhors in Gilgit-Baltistan this week.

According to the GB wildlife department, James Kevin of the United States paid $131,000 for a trophy permit to hunt the markhor in the Jutial Conservancy area of Gilgit district, and Viejo Gonzalez Jesus of Mexico paid $136,000 for a trophy permit to hunt the markhor in Bunji in Astore district.

A guy was arrested earlier this week in Askoli village, Shigar district, by the wildlife department and Central Karakoram National Park employees for unlawfully shooting Himalayan ibex.
