Dr. Sabit Rahim, a renowned economist and academician from Ishkoman valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, P**istan, passed away on May 22, 2023. He was 79 years old.
Dr. Rahim was born in Kouchdeh village of Ishkoman valley in 1944. He received his early education from local schools and then went on to study at the University of Peshawar, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1966. He then went on to the University of Karachi, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Economics in 1968 and a PhD in Economics in 1972.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Rahim joined the Planning and Development Department of the Government of P**istan. He served in various capacities in the department, including as Deputy Chief Economist, Joint Economic Advisor, and Director General of the Economic Research Institute. He retired from government service in 2004.
After retirement, Dr. Rahim joined the faculty of the Karakoram International University in Gilgit-Baltistan. He taught economics and development studies at the university until his death.
Dr. Rahim was a prolific writer and scholar. He authored and co-authored several books and articles on economics, development, and social issues. He was also a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines.
Dr. Rahim was a highly respected economist and academician. He was a pioneer in the field of development economics in P**istan. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. His death is a great loss to the country and the region.
