Message On World Tourism Day – September 27, 2023



Mr. Mustansir Zakir - Chairman - Pakistan Hotels Association ( PHA )

On behalf of Executive Committee and Members of Pakistan Hotels Association (PHA), I would like to congratulate Pakistan’s hospitality, tourism and travel trade for its revival specially on this year’s World Tourism Day, globally celebrated each year on 27th September by the United Nation’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). As NWTO has designated Year 2023 as the Year of Tourism and Green Investment, it also highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for people, for planet and for prosperity. Now is the time for new and innovative solutions, not just traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity. Tourism gives rural communities the ability to protect and promote their natural surroundings, as well as their culture and heritage. In doing so, it allows tourists to enjoy unique experiences in preserving and promoting natural and cultural heritage.

PHA has proven its vital role and is further endeavoring to promote tourism and bring collaboration amongst its members all over Pakistan. There is a need for more and better-targeted traditional and non-traditional investments required for People, for Planet and for Prosperity, to enable tourism to deliver on its massive potential to provide opportunities for people to accelerate climate action and greater sustainability for the planet and deliver inclusive prosperity around the world.

On its part, PHA would like to encourage all stakeholders of tourism and travel industry to come together to mutually discuss and implement the sustainable development of tourist destinations in Pakistan to promote tourism in the country and procure foreign exchange enabling businesses to grow and create employment. Pakistan has potential and is enriched with traditional heritage and cultural tourism areas and communities.

On invitation of Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah, newly appointed Managing Director of Sindh Tourism Development Corporation ( STDC ), a meeting was held in STDC Head Office, Karachi attended by Mr. Mustansir Zakir, Chairman, Pakistan Hotels Association ( PHA ) and Secretary General PHA, who congratulated Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah for his new responsibility. A conducive and constructive meeting was held to discuss the possibility to promote tourism in Sindh through Inter-Provincial tourism, Religious tourism, Heritage tourism as Sindh Province is enriched with all these attractions. Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah offered Hoteliers group to visit their hotels / resorts and market their products in coordination with hotels. They also deliberated way forward to promote Sindh Tourism by means of display of STDC Tour Packages, brochures through hotels tourist guide counters and arranging tour group visits.

Meeting ended with strong assurances to work together in hopes to strengthen and promote tourism in Sindh. M.D. STDC as per the tradition of giving utmost respect, honored PHA delegates by presenting traditional gift of Sindh Ajrak along with STDC Souvenirs and brochures. On invitation of Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah, newly appointed Managing Director of Sindh Tourism Development Corporation, a meeting was held in his Office on June 27, 2023, attended by Mr. Mustansir Zakir, Chairman PHA and Secretary General PHA. Possibility to promote tourism in Sindh was discussed in detail through Inter-Provincial tourism, Religious tourism, Heritage tourism as Sindh Province is enriched with all these attractions. Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah and Mr. Mustansir Zakir also deliberated way forward to promote Sindh Tourism through display of STDC Tour Packages, brochures at hotels tourist guide counters, arranging tour group visits and MD, STDC offered hoteliers group to visit STDC hotels / motels and resorts at different locations etc.
M.D. STDC desired to get PHA Membership and proceed further for better arrangements in this regards.

While concluding the meeting, Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah presented traditional gifts of Sindh including Ajrak to PHA Chairman and Secretary General. Thanks to MD, STDC for his kind hospitality.

Hotel industry earns foreign exchange in all circumstances and it needs special treatment, say Main Akram Farid, Senior Vice Chairman, Pakistan Hotels Association
ISLAMABAD : June 04,2023: The delegation led by Pakistan Hotels Association’s Senior Vice Chairman, Mian Akram Farid, met with Minister of Finance and Revenue Mr. Ishaq Dar, Adviser on Revenue Mr. Tariq Pasha, Special Assistant on Finance Mr. Tariq Bajwa, and Chairman FBR Mr. Asim Ahmed. and presented their budget proposals on behalf of Pakistan Hotels Association.
Mian Akram Farid said that the Hotel industry has been badly affected due to the corona epidemic, and during the corona epidemic, the hotels in Islamabad and Karachi kept the people coming from foreign countries free of charge in Quarantine, but the government did not allow this hotel. No relief has been given to the industry.
Due to the absence of a National Tourism Policy and a consistent policy framework from the Government for the Hotel Industry, no new major hotel chain has entered Pakistan since the 1990s. By solving the problems faced by this industry, it can earn a lot of revenue – this industry is an important source of national revenue.
In Pakistan, 0.5 to 6 million people are associated with the hotel industry and the employment of lakhs of people is dependent on this industry. He said that due to credit sale, hotel owners are paying sales tax and bed tax, bed tax, which was very low earlier, and now is not in any province except capital Territory, Balochistan and KP, it is in Islamabad and In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, it has increased to 50%.
The government should immediately abolish bed tax in federal/provincial scope. In order for the industry to survive, as hotel customers are shifting to flats and guest houses due to the 21 percent interest rate, he said the government should consider reducing the federal and provincial sales tax on hotels to a maximum of 10 percent. do Or at least by amending the relevant sales tax laws to all acceptable tax rates, the government should reconsider the abolition of import duties/regulatory duties on import of machinery and other goods for the hotel industry, which causes high cost. The cost of doing business has increased and the clearance of goods is delayed, the current market land prices have also increased, and there are many other taxes and levies on the comprehensive hotel industry. They invest in the acquisition of land for hotels, so land should be provided to the hotel industry at the government rates, he said that the government should take steps on this, and the interest rate should be reconsidered in the future monetary policy. Electricity and gas.
The current tariff is one of the biggest problems to control the cost of production/operation of the industry, reducing costs especially electricity and gas prices for the tourism industry. There are many restrictions/complications while making remittances, State Bank should relax them, otherwise foreign professionals, technicians, and other consultants will avoid providing services in Pakistan for new projects. State Bank of Pakistan needs to facilitate this, Mian Akram Farid added that there should be only one annual budget during the financial year and no mini-budget/revision, which would shake the confidence of investors. In addition, there is discontinuity in government policies. The Finance Minister assured the delegation that the government values the services of the hotel industry in the country’s economy. Steps are being taken for this.
He said that the proposals presented by the business community are always taken very seriously during the preparation of the federal budget and steps are being taken to present a business-friendly budget. Along with the Finance Minister, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Revenue Tariq Mehmood Pasha, Special Assistant for Finance Tariq Bajwa, Chairman of Reforms and Resource Mobilization Commission Ashfaq Tola, Chairman FBR Asim Ahmed and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue Division were also present.

National Tour Guides Training Program Registration
In order to fill the gap of Trained Tour Guides and to provide opportunity to unemployed young people to get jobs in the field of Tour Operation, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) in collaboration with Department of Tourist Services (DTS), Sustainable Tourism Foundation Pakistan (STFP), College of Tourism and Hotel Management (COTHM) and Pakistan Association of Tour Operators (PATO) under the supervision of World Federation of Tour Guides Association (WFTGA) is organizing a series of Tour Guides Training Workshops under the National Tour Guide Training Program. 1000 Tour Guides will be trained all over Pakistan in next two years.

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing away of Byram D Avari, Chairman, Avari Hotels Limited and former Chairman, Pakistan Hotels Association in Karachi on Sunday, January 22nd 2023.

May his soul rest in peace and give patience to his loved ones for this great loss, he was an amazing human being, and it’s a great loss to Hospitality industry. His contribution towards hotel industry will always be remembered. He was amongst the founders of Pakistan Hotels Association (PHA). Hotel Industry has lost one of its true leaders. He possessed unmatched knowledge of hotel industry. He won Gold Medals in Yachting for Pakistan.

Very sad news, irreparable loss for the family & the entire Hospitality Industry as a whole. Highly respected figure of the industry, an Icon and pioneer of Hotel Industry in Pakistan. His human element was exemplary & shall be remembered for a long time. May his soul rest in peace & blessed for his good deeds. End of an era & a legend. May his legacy of service & noble hood continues.

One of our Members, M/s. Serena Hotels / Tourism Promotion Services (Pakistan ) Limited have achieved yet another milestone by opening their doors in the historic city of Peshawar. With effect from December 14, 2022, Pearl-Continental Hotel Peshawar is being managed and operated by Serena Hotels.

Tourism Promotion Services (Limited) Pakistan, the owners and managers of Serena Hotels in Pakistan announced the takeover of Pearl Continental Hotel, Peshawar. This will be the ninth Serena Hotel property in Pakistan, says a press release.

Serena Hotels brand with unique destinations globally, will be renovating and refurbishing the centrally located Hotel building as all Serena Hotel properties’ stand as a reflection of its vision and brand values.

The company intends to exploit the untapped, rich potential in the tourism sector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This will be the second Serena Hotel in the KP province after the Swat Serena Hotel, enabling the brand to connect the diverse tourist communities to the rustic areas of the province.
The upgradation of Peshawar Serena Hotel including the new construction will enhance the quality and comfort of the guest rooms, restaurants, banqueting and meeting rooms, public areas and Maisha Spa & Health Club. Mr. Irfan Iqbal Sheikh, President FPCCI, expressed his satisfaction at the display of unprecedented unity on the somber occasion of a high-profile & very well-attended condolence reference to remember one of the most revered business leaders of Pakistani history, i.e. Late SM Muneer. Mr. Shabbir Mansha, VP FPCCI, remembered that the Late SM Muneer launched many young, energetic and vibrant faces in the trade politics – and, never left the children of his diseased associates & staff alone in the times of crisis. Mr. Shaukat Omerson, VP FPCCI, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of a father figure for the entire business community and how he trained the younger generations for future leadership roles. He also expressed his admiration for the late leader that how he cared for his staff and their kids.
Mr. Iftikhar Malik, a former President of FPCCI, said that Late SM Muneer was one of the most knowledgeable trade leaders he ever come across in his 40 years of trade politics as he was always well-prepared with data and recommendations for the meetings pertaining to policy advocacy.

Mr. Hanif Gohar, a prominent business personality & a long-time associate of Late SM Muneer, expressed his deep gratitude that every single government official, politician, social figure or business personality has showered their love & prayers on the late leader.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Sports and Tourism, Awn Chaudry inaugurated the ‘Pakistan Pavilion’ at World Travel Market (WTM) in London today. Tourism Ministers of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan as well as Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK, Moazzam Ahmad Khan were also present on the occasion.

Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), Provincial Tourism Departments, Azad Jammu &Kashmir, Balochistan, Punjab, and Gilgit Baltistan participated in the travel show. Appreciating the organizers, he said showcasing Pakistan’s tourism opportunities at international travel shows like WTM would help attract more tourists to Pakistan. He also received suggestions from the participants and assured them of all possible assistance from the Government of Pakistan.

The Adviser said that Pakistan was blessed with beautiful landscapes and cultural diversity, and that’s why the country has been witnessing exponential rise in tourism lately. Mr. Chaudry said the Government was committed to promoting tourism abroad and was doing its best to improve tourism-related infrastructure to facilitate tourists.

By showcasing the rich diversity of the country, Pakistan Pavilion attracted a large number of travel enthusiasts, representatives of international travel companies, and social media influencers. The Pakistan Pavilion was also the focus of those who had previously visited Pakistan for tourism and were excited to visit again to explore more of the country.

WTM London is one of the largest travel shows in the world and introduces global travel buyers to over 5,000 of the biggest destinations and brands in the world. The show will continue from 7-9 November 2022.

Flood Relief activities. of Members of Pakistan Hotels Association. Our members of Serena Hotels in Pakistan have submitted following report:

Under its Jazba e Khidmat program, Serena Hotels in collaboration with their guests and employees has supported thousands of flood affected houses throughout Pakistan. Sharing the same cause & after distributing 500 Ration bags in Hazara Town Quetta and Usta Muhammad Jafarabad to the families, who were effected by recent floods, this time 300 more bags have been distributed in Nowrak Village of Gulistan to people, who lost their houses in the recent flash floods. These are the activities carried out by Quetta Serena Hotel. Serena Group did similar activities in Swat and Gilgit Baltistan flood affected areas and their details would also be shared soon. Besides above, lot of work has been done to this cause from Hotel Industry, but quietly without any exposure to media. Most employees of Hotels and Association have donated their one day salary and management has matched the total amount for this purpose besides their personal cash and kind donations. Every individual effort counts and that’s what the teamwork is all about.
