Reinhold Messner & Rozi Ali's Encounter with the Himalayan Brown Bear: Pioneering Contributions to Yeti Research & Himalayan Exploration.

This is an excerpt from the Strange Animal Podcast, a podcast about living, extinct, and imaginary animals and messner,s book " My Quest for Yeti "

In 1997, Reinhold Messner, a renowned Italian mountaineer, and his guide Rozi Ali had an encounter with a mysterious creature in the peaks of the Nanga Parbat. The locals called it a "dremo," a Tibetan word commonly used to refer to both the yeti and the Himalayan brown bear.

After a long trek, Messner and Rozi Ali caught sight of the creature, which fled when it saw them. However, it seemed to stop and rest in a hollow. Messner, being the curious adventurer he is, decided to approach the creature. He carefully made his way down to where the animal was sleeping in the grass, taking care not to startle it.

Rozi Ali, on the other hand, was fearful and tried to stop Messner from getting closer. He grasped Messner's arm, begging him to make a run for it. But Messner broke free and continued his approach.

As he got within twenty yards of the creature, Messner took out his camera and snapped some photos. The animal, startled by Messner's presence, woke up and looked at him with a curious expression. Messner described the encounter, saying that the animal looked at him "in the way a startled child would a stranger."

As it turned out, the mysterious creature was not a yeti, but a young Himalayan brown bear. Messner and Rozi Ali had a similar encounter later on in Kashmir, where they saw another "dremo" running away on two legs. Again, it was a brown bear.

Messner's encounters with the "dremo" led him to conclude that the yeti legend was likely inspired by sightings of Himalayan brown bears. Many others have come to the same conclusion, and it's possible that the legend of the yeti has been perpetuated by cultural and linguistic factors.

In recent years, genetic analysis has shed more light on the mysterious creatures of the Himalayas. In 2014, a team of geneticists from Oxford University analyzed hair samples from a Himalayan bear and found that the DNA was similar to that of a 40,000-year-old polar bear. However, a later analysis in 2015 by geneticists from the Smithsonian and the University of Kansas found that the hair belonged to a native brown bear, likely a rare and endangered subspecies known as the Tibetan blue bear.

Despite the lack of evidence for the existence of the yeti, the legend remains a fascinating and captivating part of Himalayan folklore. And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll discover a new species of bear that will shed new light on the mystery of the yeti.
