یاک ہمالین رینج کا ایک سردی پسند اور انسان دوست جانور ہے۔ جسکی دو قسمیں ہیں جنگلی اور گھریلو۔

گھریلو یاک انڈیا، نیپال، تبت اور پاکستان کے انتہائی شمالی علاقوں جیسے شمشال اور خنجراب میں لوگ گھروں میں گائے، بھینسوں اور بھیڑ بکریوں کی طرح پالتے ہیں۔

ان علاقوں میں یاک زیادہ تر باربرداری کے کام آتے ہیں۔ چونکہ یہ بہت طاقتور ہوتے ہیں اور مشکل راستوں اور ڈھلوانوں پر بھاری سامان لے جانا صرف یاک ہی کر سکتے ہیں۔
یاک کا گوشت کافی لذیذ ہوتا ہے لیکن انتہائی مہنگا ہونے کی وجہ سے عام دستیاب نہیں ہوتا۔ خنجراب پاس کے نزدیک جب یاک چائنہ بارڈر کراس کرتے ہیں تو چائنہ کے سیکورٹی فورسز ان کو پکڑ لیتے ہیں اور واپس نہیں چھوڑتے۔

Shigar (Urdu: شگر) is the headquarter of its namesake district and tehsil in the Baltistan division of Gilgit–Baltistan in northern Pakistan. It is located at the bank of Shigar River in the most remote and dramatic part of the region. It is a popular site for tourists and trekkers and contains many historical buildings of architectural significance associated with several different communities
The town is inhabited almost exclusively by the Balti people of Tibetan descent. Almost 65% of the population belongs to the Shia sect of Islam, 26% belongs to the Norbakhshi sect and the remaining belong to the Sunni sect. It is the gateway to the great mountain range of Karakoram including where 5 Eight-thousanders of the world falls, including the K2.

The town serves as a gateway to the Karakoram mountains including K2, via the Shigar Valley.
