Before the arrival of Islam religion in the Skardu Baltistan at fourteenth century AD, only "Buddhism" was practiced here.
The Buddha image in the Skardu Manthal dates back to the 8th century AD, which means it is more or less 12 hundred years old. This Buddha stone is historically an important historical and cultural heritage of Buddhism. It is actually a rock-cut image of the Buddha Council called Mandala and "Manthal" is a corruption of the same "Mandala".
It is known from history and evidence that in 727 AD, Tibetans included Baltistan in their kingdom and then Buddhism started to be propagated here. Skardu was made the capital of the western provinces and the carving of this large Buddha Rock was also completed during this period.
The rock is triangular in shape with a height of 30 feet and a widths of 20 to 25 feet. A lotus flower is carved in a vase on the rock. In the middle, the big Buddha Buddha is seated on a lotus flower. Similarly, all other Buddhas are also sitting on lotus flowers ( _flower). The lotus flower is considered auspicious in Buddhism.
There are 20 smaller Buddhas seated around the Big Buddha. All of these are past Buddhas called "Kalpas" in Buddhist terms. Two Buddhas are seen standing in the picture. These are the coming Buddhas called "Maitreya". The inscription on the rock consists of three parts in Tibetan script, two of which have been lost by time. Only one section remains, which contains the religious orders and instructions of Buddhism and urges to keep the environment clean. In the right-hand corner of the rock are the blurred figures of three figures who appear to be high-ranking lamas. Behind this rock, a stupa was built. At the top end of the rock a niche is carved to trap roof beams. In front of the rock there is a platform for performing prayers while on the two sides behind are caves where lamas used to live. These mandala impressions and other objects in the surroundings show that the area was an important center of Buddhist activity during this period.

The Baltistan region includes four more districts: Skardu, Ghanche, Kharmang and Shigar while Skardu district is the capital of Baltistan region. Skardu district has superiority over all other districts in both development and population. Mention the names of the historical and tourist places in this district, they are as follows:

3) Kharpocho fort
4) Menthal Buddha rock
5) Khachura valley
6) Sadpara lake
7) Sadpara valley
8) Deosai top
9) Bara Pani
10) Cold Desert
11) Masoor rock

Then coming to Ghancha district, this district is three hour away from Skardu. This district has its own example in beauty. Here are some historical and tourist places of this district:
1) Khaplu fort
2) Chaqchan Mosque (these are hundreds of years old mosques)
3) Siachen Glaciers
4) Saling Spantoq which is a natural greenery.
5) River Shyok (which comes from India)
6) Chorbat Valley
7) Hoshe Valley
8) Balghar meadows
9)Thoqsikhar

Speaking of Shigar District, this region is not only considered to have beautiful mountains but also has very beautiful historical sites. The world's second highest peak K2 is also present in this district and 5 mountains above 8000 altitude in the world are also present in this region. This district is located at a distance of 30 km from Skardu The places mentioned are:
1) Shiger fort
2) Blind lake
3) The world's highest and coldest desert 4)(Sarfaranga)
5) Hashopi Bagh
6) khanqah e mualla is a 600 year old mosque.
7) River Indus.

Now let me finally tell you about Kharmang district, this district like all other districts is exemplary in its beauty. The people here are very hospitable.
