National Ice Sports Championship to Conclude in Nalter, Gilgit-Baltistan
The National Ice Sports Championship, held from January 15 to 22 in Nalter, Gilgit-Baltistan, will conclude tomorrow with a grand closing ceremony. This prestigious event showcased five thrilling competitions: ice hockey, speed skating, curling, figure skating, and relay races, with men’s and women’s categories adding to the excitement.
The championship brought together 12 teams from across Pakistan, including 7 men’s and 5 women’s teams, representing Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, GB Scouts, and the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
Emerging as the standout region, Gilgit-Baltistan clinched 12 medals, comprising 3 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze. The Gilgit-Baltistan Winter Sports Association (GBWSA) secured the women’s ice hockey title, while GB Scouts triumphed in the men’s category.
In speed skating, GB Scouts bagged gold in the men’s event, and GBWSA led in the women’s category. Sindh made history in figure skating by winning gold in the women’s category, while GB Scouts claimed the top spot in the men’s division.
Relay races brought further success to GB Scouts, who won the men’s event, while GBWSA dominated the women’s relay. The curling competition saw KPK crowned champions in the men’s category, and PAF taking gold in the women’s event.
As the host, Gilgit-Baltistan was permitted to field two men’s and two women’s teams, which contributed to the region’s dominant performance. The closing ceremony on January 22 will honor the achievements of all participants and mark the successful conclusion of this landmark championship.
Following the championship, the spotlight will shift to the Seven Days Winter Feast, set to commence on January 23 in Murtazabad, Hunza. Organized under the leadership of the Gilgit-Baltistan government in collaboration with the Gilgit-Baltistan Winter Sports Association (GBWSA), this event promises to celebrate the region’s rich culture and winter sports legacy.
