It is truly disheartening to see a national hero like Sirbaz Khan, who has achieved such an extraordinary feat, not receive the recognition he deserves. Summiting all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks is a historical moment not just for Gilgit-Baltistan, but for the entire nation. The lack of a warm and deserving welcome, especially at Islamabad airport, speaks volumes about the disparity in how athletes and heroes from different regions are celebrated. If he were from Punjab or other more prominent regions, the reception would likely have been grander, filled with media attention, fanfare, and official recognition. This neglect is an unfortunate reflection of how the contributions from smaller regions like Gilgit-Baltistan often go unnoticed or underappreciated.

It’s a shame that the GB government and the nation at large failed to give Sirbaz Khan the hero’s welcome he so rightfully earned. Heroes like him represent the best of Pakistan, yet their extraordinary achievements are met with indifference.

Sirbaz Khan from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, has made history by summiting Mt. Shishapangma, becoming the first Pakistani to conquer all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. Even more remarkable, 11 of these were climbed without the use of supplemental oxygen.

Starting out humbly as a kitchen boy and porter, Sirbaz spent 11 years working his way up through the ranks before emerging as a leading figure in Pakistan’s mountaineering scene.

In the world of climbing, summiting all 14 of the 8,000-meter peaks is one of the greatest honors, a challenge only a select few have completed. According to renowned climber Nirmal “Nims” Purja, fewer than 40 mountaineers have managed this extraordinary achievement.

A Glimpse into Hunza’s Forgotten Heritage

I recently discovered a 50-year-old documentary by Uxi M***i that showcases the real Hunzai culture and the organic lifestyle our elders lived. Despite the harsh conditions, their connection with nature and sustainability was remarkable.
Fast forward to today, and we see unsustainable constructions and the loss of much of our precious land. We are turning this once-pristine region into a mess. It's time to reflect on our actions and strive to protect what’s left of Hunza’s beauty and culture before it’s too late.
