Pakistan's tourism industry has seen both challenges and potential in recent years. Globally, tourism has been a significant contributor to GDP growth, accounting for 10.2% of the world's GDP in 2019. However, the industry faced its worst year in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with international arrivals dropping by 74%.

In Pakistan, tourism accounts directly for 2.8% of GDP, and when including related industries, it contributes to 7% of GDP. This sector provides 1.4 million direct jobs and 3.6 million jobs when related industries are considered. Despite its potential, Pakistan's tourism sector currently ranks below average on a global scale, standing at 121 out of 140 countries overall.

Tourism is viewed as a driver of economic growth in Pakistan. It stimulates various allied industries, boosts economic activities, generates revenue, supports infrastructure development, and promotes the inclusion of marginalized areas and communities. However, Pakistan's share of foreign tourists in South Asia is relatively low at 5.5%, compared to India's 44% and Iran's 28.4%.

To promote tourism, Pakistan has introduced an e-Visa facility for over 170 countries and developed a National Tourism Strategy Action Plan (2020-2025). Despite its potential, Pakistan lags behind countries like Switzerland, which earned $47 billion from tourism in 2019, while tourism accounted for only 5.7% of Pakistan's total economy in the same year.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on Pakistan's tourism sector, with a nearly 25% decline in growth and a decrease in jobs in 2020. However, the government's efforts, improved law and order situation, and Pakistan's recognition as a top holiday destination in 2020 suggest that the tourism sector may contribute significantly to the country's economy by 2025, with a projected contribution of Rs. 1 trillion.

Good news for consumers

To summarize, the item-wise relief based on the given facts are as follows:

Vehicles: Duties on 49 tariff lines of vehicles have been reduced in the range of 10% to 100%, and the additional customs duties on cars have been removed.

Mobile Phones: Regulatory duties on mobile phones have been cut by half, with reduced duties on phones of different values.

Meat: The regulatory duty on meat has been reduced to 5%.

Fruits: The duties on fruits have been reduced from 74% to 20-25%.

Nuts: The duties on nuts have been reduced from 49% to 30%.

Cat and Dog Food: The regulatory duty on cat and dog food has been reduced from 49% to 25%.

Chocolates: Chocolates will attract 30% regulatory duty, as compared to the previous rate of 49%.

Sanitaryware Fittings: The old rate of 10% regulatory duty on sanitaryware fittings has been revived.

It's important to note that while these measures aim to provide relief to consumers and reduce the import bill, their effectiveness may be limited due to other factors such as the decision of the State Bank of Pakistan to disallow the opening of letters of credit for imports or availability of foreign currency. The impact on revenue for the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) should also be taken into consideration.

This summer your destination.

Unknown Lake of Pakistan - Borith Lake

Borith Lake, which is located in Upper Hunza, Pakistan is a high-altitude freshwater lake that sits at an elevation of approximately 8,500 feet (2,600 meters) above sea level. It is about 2 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, and it is fed by the surrounding glaciers and snow-capped peaks.

The lake is a popular tourist destination and is known for its beautiful turquoise-blue water, surrounded by the rugged mountainous terrain of the Karakoram Range. Visitors can go hiking, camping, and fishing around the lake, as well as explore the nearby villages and glaciers.

The lake is also an important habitat for various species of birds, including bar-headed geese, brown-headed gulls, and common coots. In addition, the lake is home to trout fish, which is a popular delicacy in the region.

How to reach here:

To reach Lake Borith from Islamabad, you can take a flight or drive to Gilgit, the capital city of Gilgit-Baltistan region. From Gilgit, you can hire a private car or take a public transport to reach the town of Karimabad, which is the main town of Hunza Valley. From Karimabad, you can continue your journey to the village of Hussaini, which is located about 14 km from Karimabad.

Once you reach Hussaini, you will need to hike for about 2-3 hours to reach Lake Borith. The hiking trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is recommended to carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no shops or restaurants along the way.

The Peshawar High Court Circuit Bench at Abbottabad on Friday issued a stay order on Galiyat Development Authority’s (GDA) decision of providing 110 kanals land to a private company, Manal Group, on a long-term lease for the Ayubia chairlift.

The existing chairlift was procured in 1963 and expired 27 years ago in 1994. The chairlift has been in shambles for well over a decade and requires immediate attention. The GDA had, therefore, declared it unsafe for tourists, and wanted to replace it with a new one.
