In Poland, Turkish-style coffee, known as “zalewajka” or “plujka,” was popular for many years. Its preparation involved pouring boiling water over ground coffee without using a filter. While modern brewing methods are now preferred, this way of serving coffee is still practised in some homes and cafes ☕

Yet, in Poland, coffee isn’t just a drink; it’s also an excuse for social gatherings 👥 The tradition of meeting in cafes dates back to the interwar period, when café culture flourished in cities like Warsaw and Kraków. Later, during communist times, coffee was a luxury item and often hard to come by, so it was replaced by chicory coffee, which remains popular in many Polish homes, especially among older generations 🧑‍🦳 and children 👶

Today, cafes still play an important role as places for socialising, work, and relaxation.

Kłodzko Fortress is an impressive 17th-century structure that still amazes with its size and history. It is one of the best-preserved fortifications of this type in Poland.

The fortress dazzles with its unique shape and offers several different sightseeing routes. There are also special events like night tours and off-the-beaten-path walks, where even more secrets and curiosities await.

Highly recommended, especially with a guide!

Poles love sauerkraut 😍 Today it’s available in stores, but in the past, fermenting cabbage was a big event and a symbol of community—back then, the whole family would gather to prepare supplies for winter 🌬️

Large barrels, sometimes taller than an adult person, were prepared and carefully sterilised. On linen sheets, cabbage heads were laid, cleaned, and finely chopped. The shredded cabbage was placed into barrels, where it was stomped down… with feet. Sprinkled with salt and other ingredients, it was pressed until juice was released.

Once the barrel was filled, it was sealed and placed in a warm area. After a week, the barrel was moved to a cold room, and the cabbage was stomped again. Finally, the cabbage was covered with a cloth and wooden lid, and weighed down by a stone.

Prepared this way, it would stay in the barrel until the next summer, nourishing the family through winter, saving them from hunger during lean seasons 🥶

We love kebabs, fries, and burgers, but it is the zapiekanka that is the true iconic dish in Poland! 😍

Zapiekanka is a popular Polish street food dish that has gained nationwide recognition. It consists of a long baguette 🥖 topped with mushrooms, cheese 🧀, and various other ingredients, drizzled with ketchup.

The dish originates from the communist era, when many products were scarce, and chefs had to get creative. The most famous zapiekankas are in Kraków's Nowy Square, where they have enjoyed unwavering popularity.

Have you already tried a zapiekanka?

Zamek Królewski w Warszawie, destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in the 1970s, symbolises Polish spirit and determination 💪

Although today it looks awe-inspiring, during the September Campaign, it was practically razed to the ground due to artillery and aerial bombardments. After the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, the remains of the building were blown up by the Germans, only to be spectacularly rebuilt later 🧱

Today, the Royal Castle blends history with modernity at the highest level and offers magnificent interiors and the possibility of hosting exclusive business events 🇵🇱

Travelling through Poland at the end of summer, one can notice strange, artistic, and creative constructions made of hay bales 🌾 This is a unique way of inviting people to the harvest festival celebrations 🥳 But what exactly is the harvest festival?

It’s Dożynki - the Harvest Festival – a folk celebration combined with thanksgiving rituals for the completion of the harvest and fieldwork 🎊

In pre-Christian times, it was an ethnic Slavic holiday, occurring around the autumn equinox (September 23). Today, it is usually celebrated on one of the Sundays or Saturdays in August or September after the harvest is over. Church ceremonies, picnics, and gatherings of local communities often accompany these celebrations.
