Let's participate in the review of the Canal Luis Peña Natural Reserve Action Plan! 👇🏽https://forms.gle/8DJ38gRoh1WEroUb7

The Canal Luis Pena is the body of water between the island of Culebra and Cayo Luis Peña (the key that we see when we arrive at the ferry terminal).

The Luis Peña Channel was designated as a natural reserve after a historic effort by the Fishermen's Association, the scientific community and the Culebra community, to:
1)protect and conserve its coral reefs, seagrasses and marine life,
2) serve as a nursery to increase the number of fish and
3)provide local employment opportunities through responsible ecotourism.
With its designation, fishing of all species was prohibited within the Channel, including Playa Melones, Playa Tamarindo, Playa Carlos Rosario.

The Community Advisory Board of the CLP Natural Reserve, the DRNA and ACDEC are reviewing the 2024-2030 Action Plan, and we want you to be part of its review. You can participate by choosing a topic of interest; or all topics (Biodiversity, Sustainable use, Surveillance, Education, Research, Administration).

Your participation is key to achieving the conservation and collaborative management of the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Luis Peña Channel.

Don’t miss the rare chance to witness a Taíno Areyto, a ceremonial dance of the Taino, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti/Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas. Twenty members of the Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-Cu A Borikén are bringing this performance to Chicago for the first time! It’s a unique opportunity to learn about the Taíno Indigenous people of Puerto Rico (Borikén) and their rich traditions.

This performance is a highlight of our exhibition, ¡Taíno Vive! Caribbean Indigenous Resistance, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, Field Museum, and Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-Cu A Borikén. We will set up a tent with seating on our beautiful lawn to recreate a Batey-like space for this historic ceremony (sunshine or rain, we will be covered).

Two performances:
Friday, May 31, 2024 at 11 AM
Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 12 PM

A suggested $10 donation will directly support the work of Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén.

For the Friday, May 31st performance at 11AM ONLY, Schools and Senior Citizen Centers do not have to make a donation and should email [email protected] to coordinate receiving tickets for your group.

This is made possible by the generous support of our presenting sponsor, The Angell Foundation, and our supporting sponsors: Senator Omar Aquino, Alderperson Jessie Fuentes, the State of Illinois, the City of Chicago’s Department of Special Events, the Chicago Park District, and The Illinois Arts Council.
