Salão Nobre - I simply love this room in our city hall of Braga! Just look at these painting details! It’s one of those places that still amazes me every time I go there 😍
This last weekend I attended a conference in Braga regarding how the Bracari and the Romans dressed back then, as preparation for Braga Romana - Reviver Bracara Augusta. In the end they needed volunteers so I went, of course 🤣 But it helped me to better understand how to fold the outer layer, I still had doubts with that and how to use the fibula.

In my tours you're always free of asking me things, either from the place we are or about Portugal. People are always free to make a dialogue with me!
Some days I just happen to stumble upon curious coincidences. In this case, I started the tour speaking about André Soares, and then when I get to the Municipality Square, where we have 2 of his works, from the Palace’s door leaves the greatest Historian of André Soares’ life and work - Eduardo Pires de Oliveira. I don’t know the probability of this, I’m awful at Math, but I’d say it’s not that huge 😂

Memories from a week spent in the North of Portugal with a group from Madrid. The lady in charge with the group took the time to send me a message to know they had arrived safely and to send me love.
And these are their faces before the tasting! 😆😆😆

Our Lady of Solitude.
Yesterday night. The rituals of the Holy Week of Braga started yesterday and while I was waiting for the start of the Via Crucis I took this picture.
The is Saint James’ Tower, in Braga. The image on top is called Our Lady of the Tower. Since it’s a representation of the Virgin Mary, she is dressed with a red tunic and a blue veil, the colors that you normally see on Our Lady of Solitude and Our Lady of Sorrows images.
Holy Week is the week that tells you about the Passion of Christ and the suffering he and his mother endured. So under Mary’s image you see the image of Jesus already arrested. He was arrested and mocked for being the King of the Jews, because nobody believed he could be the king. So the guards placed a crown of thorns on his head and a red cape to represent the symbols of the king.
Purple was the most expensive color in Middle Ages so it became associated with Jesus’ pain. That is why it is the color of Holy Week. In Easter Sunday and onwards, the colour will be the white, to represent the Ressurrection.
Next Friday we're going to have the Procession of the Burial of Our Lord. It's known in Braga as the Procession of Silence, but I may add that it could also be the Procession of Darkness, since the streets were so dark last year. You can see on the pictures that the ciity lights were covered in black. Black is the colour for mourning in Portugal.
Pictures from last year's Ecce Homo Procession. Ecce Homo is Latin for "Here's the man" and it's a sentence used by Pilatus when he showed Jesus to the people. The representation of Jesus shows you an almost naked person, with tied hands. He was arrested and he is in his most vulnerability. This procession is also known in Braga as the Procession of the Fire since some farricocos carry fire.
Some stills from the last year's Procession of the Little Donkey. We call it like that because we use a real donkey to transport the image of Mary and Jesus. It's a Procession about the Old Testament (or Torah for Jewish people) and it ends in the New Testament with Jesus and his parent returning to Nazareth. Because of this, you will see Jewish symbols and people dressed as Hebrews and Egyptians.
Later today I will post a video where you can see the real donkey!
Next week, from Palm Saturday to Easter Sunday, we have the Holy Week, and in particular the Holy Week of Braga is special, since it has rituals that are unique in the world - rituals from the Bracarensis Rites.
In the same week, so starting next Saturday, you'll be able to see the 8 Stations/Steps of the Passion of Christ! They are closed in the rest of the year and the first one is a temporary one, it's displayed only in Holy Week. Have a sneak peak of what you can see next week:
1 - Jesus takes the Cross
2+3 - Jesus meets His Mother
4 - Jesus falls to the Ground
5 - Veronica wipes Jesus' face
6 - On the Way to Calvary
7 - Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem
8 - Second fall of Christ
9 - Jesus is nailed to the cross
You can see the locations of some of these stations reflected on them. Feel free to visit Braga on Saturday and to check the Procession at 10pm. It's a lovely moment of faith!
Holy Week is coming! This year the Holy Week starts on the 23rd, Palm Saturday, and ends on April 1st, with Easter Monday. When I have tourists on my tours that are not Christian but curious about our traditions, I do recommend to have vacations during this period of time in a place that lives it to its fullest. One of those places is Braga, where I live, and I will use photos and videos from last year to give you an idea this week of what you can expect. If you're close to Braga, please come and have a look in person!
Spreading some of the love we receive with you! This was a person that spent 2 days in Braga while in Braga Romana, so in order for him to enjoy the festival we divided the service in 2 days, one for the historical center of Braga, another for the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte.
And I do recomend you visit our Braga Romana festival - on the week of the 20s of May every year! ✨✨
After so many years living in Braga yesterday I got the chance to visit this church for the first time! It’s a church of a former feminine convent and it’s very rare to see it open. I loved the representation of Saint Joseph in this church as well as the Lausperene flower decorations. My favourite so far.
Exploring BTL Bolsa de Turismo de Lisboa with Authentiktours was truly enriching! 🌍
Got to delve into diverse destinations across Portugal, gaining invaluable insights and thinking about new products! 🧳
Plus, reconnecting with people I haven’t seen in a long time like Elisabete from Vieira do Minho tourism office, and Miguel from Gerês Equi'Desafios. I have also been with Jorge & Laura from Braga Tours + NorthScape
I also had the opportunity to see Luís and Carlos from Braga tourism office in action! 🗺️
Lausperene at the Church of Salvador. This church is rarely open to the public, so Lent period is a good time to@see the inside!
Another church of the Lausperene. This time the Church of Penha de França. This one has a simple decoration.
The Lausperene at the Church of Misericórdia (Mercy). Look at the marvellous curtains by the door!
Lausperene at the Seminar Church in Braga. The smell of incense was intense, it was an amazing sensory experience! Too bad this is not a known tradition outside of Portugal. I would love to see more tourists in Braga in Lent Period so they could see this.
Even though Lent period hasn't started yet, you can already see the decorations for the Lausperene at the Cathedral of Braga.
