Another day at Mauka Lodge, surfing a lot, training to get better everyday!
This week we got a group or repeaters that come every year to hang out in Ericeira, work on their skills and have a great time in and out of the water.
You can also join us next year, our 2025 sup surf retreat dates are already available on our website.
See you in the water 👍
A day at Mauka
One of the reasons we are still in business might be the fact that we take our work very seriously.
It’s easy for many surf coaches to relax and just enjoy themselves in the water, forgetting that their true purpose is to help their students develop their skills (while still having a great time, of course).
This is what motivates us, and it’s one of the reasons why Mauka is such a special place.
Passion drives us every day to be the best and to bring out the best in each guest who chooses to visit us.

These are SOME of the most common Mistakes YOU NEED TO FIX! 👇👇👇
📙 BAD POSTURE:
The majority of paddlers fail to control their body posture while paddling. Paddling involves both complex and repetitive movements. 🙋🏻♂️
If you don’t have proper muscle activation and body alignment, you may produce inefficient movements that could potentially lead to muscle imbalances and/or severe injuries.
⭐️TIP: work with a professional paddling coach on your technique, ideally a sup coach with a background in sports performance or physiotherapy like Tiago.
📙 INADEQUATE PADDLE HEIGHT:
It’s fundamental to paddle with the right length in order to improve your efficiency and reduce the chances of injury. The right paddle length depends on many factors including the volume board you’re riding, your current paddling technique, previous injuries, etc. 🤓
As a general rule of thumb, for paddle surfing it should sit between your eyebrows and top of the head. Always start from the top of the head and work your way down, if necessary.
⭐️ TIP: start with an adjustable paddle and try different lengths, in a couple of sessions you should find the most comfortable height for you.
📙 TOO BIG OF A BLADE:
Make sure your blade size is appropriate for your physical abilities, paddling style, and board size. Generally, a blade between 75 to 85 sq/inches seems best to achieve an optimal balance between power production and paddling cadence. 🚀
⭐️ TIP: Protect your shoulder from injuries avoiding bigger blades than you actually can handle.
📙 GRABBING THE PADDLE TOO TIGHT:
I’ve meet too many paddlers with shoulder and elbow problems… 🫨🫨
⚠️ Relax your hands ⚠️ squeezing your paddle shaft and handle will not lead to a stronger stroke, it will actually build fatigue in those small muscles of your hands and forearms, once again leading to more muscle tension.
⭐️TIP: Relax your hands and focus on using the big muscle
How to improve your turns [PART 2]:
📗 Experiment with Different Fins:
Try different fin setups: Experiment with various fin configurations to find the setup that suits your surfing style and helps with turning. Fin placement and size can significantly impact your board’s maneuverability.
📗 Body Rotation:
Rotate your body: Twist your upper body in the direction you want to turn. This helps initiate and guide the turn, especially when performing more radical maneuvers.
📗 Look where you want to go:
Turn your head: Look in the direction you want to turn. Your body will naturally follow your head movement, helping you maintain balance and control during the turn.
📗Stay Relaxed:
Keep a relaxed stance: Tension in your body can hinder your ability to turn smoothly. Stay loose and flexible, allowing your movements to be more fluid.
NOW, pay attention to this👇👇👇

Let me help you improve your SUP surfing and increase your wave count per session:
1️⃣ Don’t try to catch a wave with a parallel stance: instead just before the wave reaches you board step back with your back foot while keeping your weight over the front foot. You can practice this drill on land, which will greatly help you.
2️⃣ Once the wave reaches the board, if you stick to your parallel stance, the board will start wobbling from side to side and becoming very unstable which compromises stability and therefore your capacity to generate speed to catch the wave.
3️⃣ If your feet are parallel this means you can only lean side to side (left to right) but never from front to back which gives zero control during the drop in case your boards nose start sinking (resulting on a nose dive) or in case you need to press the nose down to get the maximum glide out of your board and enter the wave as earlier as possible.
