‼️SEVERAL PEOPLE ARRESTED IN BELGIUM AND SEARCHES ALSO IN PORTUGAL ON CORRUPTION IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT‼️

🟡Searches were also carried out in the Belgian regions of Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, in connection with an alleged corruption scheme involving Chinese giant Huawei and current or former MEPs.

🟡THERE WILL BE NO PORTUGUESE MEPS INVOLVED, BUT THERE ARE FIVE ITALIANS, THREE ROMANIANS, ONE CZECH AND ONE SLOVENIAN.

🟡Several people have been detained for questioning on suspicion of corruption in a case involving the Chinese company Huawei and several MEPs, who allegedly received gifts and money from the telecommunications company. The alleged transfers of financial benefits were made through a Portuguese company, which was also the target of searches this Thursday.

🟡The Belgian newspaper Le Soir, which broke the news in partnership with the local weekly Knack, the Follow The Money platform and journalists from Reporters United, reports that, after several months of investigation, several lobbyists working for the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei were arrested on suspicion of having bribed current or former MEPs to promote the company's trade policy in Europe.

In total, the Belgian Federal Police carried out 21 searches in the Brussels region, as well as in Flanders, Wallonia and Portugal. The European Parliament was not searched.

The Judicial Police confirmed to SIC the investigations in national territory.

Le Soir explains that the operation, led by the Belgian Central Office for the Suppression of Corruption, involved searches at the homes of several lobbyists who work or have worked for Huawei and who are suspected of crimes such as corruption, forgery and use of false documents, money laundering and criminal organization.

The media outlets that reported the story explained that the alleged corruption scheme took the form of valuable gifts, such as mobile phones and tickets to football matches - Huawei has a private box at the RSC Anderlecht stadium in Belgium. Transfers totalling several thousand euros were also made.

"Corruption would have been practiced regularly and very discreetly from 2021 to the present day, under the pretext of commercial lobbying and taking various forms, such as remuneration for political positions or even excessive gifts, such as food and travel expenses, or even regular invitations to football matches", clarifies in a statement the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), cited by Le Soir.

According to the MEPs' code of conduct, any object offered by a third party worth more than €150 must be declared and publicly registered in the gifts register.

‼️PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC CALLS ELECTIONS FOR MAY 18‼️

🟡The President of the Republic decided for the dissolution of a legislative assembly (or parliament) and call elections for May 18th. The announcement was made by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a statement to the country yesterday, after meeting with the Council of State.

🟡With all parties calling for the dissolution, the State Council also voted unanimously to call early elections. It is the 10th time that Parliament has been dissolved.

🟡 Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that "there was no middle way" and that it was the "clash" of ethical judgments that determined the calling of elections. What he called a "clash of ethical and moral judgment about a person and his trustworthiness, the Prime Minister", given that "among all positions agreement was not possible" and "there was no middle way".

🟡 What path to follow now until the elections? "Two months of electoral debate are now beginning to take place. "All this is happening with the annual budget approved by the main parties and in place, with economic stability and international credit, and with generaal conditions that the President of the Republic guarantees that the ex*****on of the PRR does not stop, even with the limited powers of the Government and without violating electoral rules." What is the objective? "A transition as peaceful as the one experienced in 2024, only now in two and a half months", he appealed.

‼️PERSON ARRESTED FOR AIDING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND FORGING DOCUMENTS‼️

🟡 Polícia Judiciária arrested, this Tuesday, March 11, in Lisbon, a 58-year-old man, strongly accused of committing crimes of aid to illegal immigration and forging documents since 2020.

🟡 The man is suspected of having outlined and realised a criminal plan, aimed at promoting the fraudulent regularization of hundreds of immigrants, predominantly of Indian origin, on national territory, through, namely, the creation of facade companies intended to hold labor contracts, for the purposes of legalization.

🟡 Domestic and non-domestic searches, carried out this Tuesday, by the PJ National Counter-Terrorism Unit, which is leading the investigation, resulted in the seizure of a vast collection of fake documents intended to fraudulently instruct processes for obtaining residence permit and an amount of 10,000 euros.

🟡 After being presented to the judicial authorities for the first judicial interrogation, the defendant was remanded in preventive detention.

🟡The Lisbon half marathon, Sunday 9th March 2025, considered one of the most important in the world, has broken the record for the number of participants. Find out who the favourites are and what changes will occur in the traffic.

🟡The 34th edition of the Lisbon Half Marathon will cause traffic restrictions in the city over the weekend, with some roads being closed and the 25 de Abril Bridge being closed on Sunday, between 08:50 and 14:00.

🟡The restrictions began at 9:30 am, with the closure of Avenida Marginal, Avenida de Índia and Praça do Império, in Belém, until 12:00 pm, due to the 7km Jamor race.

🟡On Sunday, the concentration and departure area for elite athletes will be closed on Avenida Marginal, between Cruz Quebrada and Algés, in both directions, from 7:00 am, with a closure also at CRIL, at the access to Avenida Marginal, from 8:00 am.

🟡Access to the 25 de Abril Bridge will be cut at 08:15, namely A5, IP7 (North-South Axis - cut at the last exit to Monsanto), Avenida de Ceuta and Viaduto Duarte Pacheco.

Traffic will also be diverted in several areas of the city and will also be closed inside the city on some roads that will be duly signposted.

Connections between Lisbon and the South Bank, and vice versa, will only be possible via the Vasco da Gama Bridge, from 08:50 on Sunday,

According to the PSP, traffic restrictions/cuts should end around 2:00 pm, except on Avenida da Índia, which is expected to end around 5:00 pm.

The Lisbon half-marathon will bring together around 40,000 participants on Sunday, including 16,000 foreigners, with over 17,000 athletes on the waiting list, the organisation detailed today.

"Once again, we have broken the record for registrations. There are more than 40,000 registered and of these, more than 16,000 are foreigners, of 120 different nationalities. They are people from all over the world. We had more than 17,000 people on the waiting list for the 21 kilometres. This is another record, there are more and more people running", explained the director of the Maratona Clube de Portugal, Miguel Móia, at a press conference previewing the 34th edition of the race.

‼️LISBON – TUK-TUK VEHICLES AND SIMILAR WITH NEW RESTRICTIONS TO CIRCULATION FROM APRIL 1ST‼️

🟡From April 1st, the ban on driving, stopping and parking tuk-tuk and similar vehicles should be extended to around 300 streets in the city.

🟡There are currently 275 streets closed to tuk-tuk and similar in Lisbon, and the municipality now intends to add 62 more streets to these restrictions and start in force monitoring of the restrictions, something it admits has not been done.

🟡This monitoring, not only of the prohibited areas but also of parking, will be carried out by the Municipal Police and EMEL.
The traffic ban will be signposted in the affected streets with the use of vertical signage, namely with the prohibited traffic sign and a sign below indicating that this prohibition refers to “tuk-tuk and similar vehicles”.

🟡The measure is justified by the “notable impacts on the city” caused by the “increasing number of these tourist activities operators”, which have led to “a notable increase in complaints from residents and trade”.

🟡The municipality thus intends to “make tourist mobility compatible with public and private transport, ensuring fluid circulation and accessibility to the historic center", adding to the ban more streets in the parishes: Avenidas Novas, Arroios, Penha de França, São Vicente, Santo António, Misericórdia and Santa Maria Maior.

🟡The form is available to CPLP citizens who have a visa without indication of the date for scheduling (the date consists of the observation field) of granting CPLP Residence Permit.

The correct filling of the form implies the express indication of the consular visa and passport number and sending a copy of the passport and visa** in the field provided for the purpose.

The following documents are required for the grant of a CPLP Residence Permit:
• Passport or other valid travel document;
• Requirement for granting a Residence Authorization and inquiry of the Portuguese criminal register;
• Criminal record certificate issued by the competent authority of the applicant's country of nationality or the country where this residence has been for more than one year;
• Proof of the existence of means of livelihood.
