🟡 The AIMA met on Monday (23/12) with consular representatives from 12 countries and representatives of the migration agency aimed to clarify how the process of regularizing immigrants in Portugal is going.

🟡 Since September, AIMA has been racing against time to resolve the approximately 450,000 pending applications for residency in Portugal. To this end, 20 service centers were opened in various parts of the country, which have been serving as bases for receiving the immigrants called and collecting their biometric data. According to calculations by AIMA president Pedro Portugal Gaspar, of the stuck applications, more than 150,000 are currently being processed and 108,000 will be called again after being rejected.

🟡More than a hundred people walked this Saturday along Rua do Benformoso, in Martim Moniz, in Lisbon, remembering the values of April, in solidarity with the immigrant population living in the area.

🟡Distributing carnations of different colors, people from various cadrants of society, including representatives of the PS, BE, P*P and Libre, explained the significance of these flowers for Portuguese democracy.

🟡The Government will strengthen the Integration, Migration and Asylum Agency (AIMA) with an additional 64 workers.
🟡Three bidding processes have been published in the Official Gazette of the Union to fill 64 vacancies in various categories.

🟡The larger competition aims to recruit 50 workers for AIMA stores. Most of them with two employees – in Albufeira, Faro, Portimão, Beja, Portalegre, Évora, Odemira, Bragança, Guarda, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Alverca, Cacém and Odivelas -, while those in Lisbon and Setúbal will be reinforced with four employees, Cascais with six and Porto with eight.

🟡The competition will be open for ten working days, counting from the day of advertising on the Public Employment Exchange (BEP). The workers will occupy the position of technical assistant, with an employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period.

🟡The second competition, with the same deadlines and procedures, aims to fill “ten jobs in the general category and career of technical assistant, from the AIMA personnel map”.

🟡The third intends to reinforce the National Center for Asylum and Refugees (CNAR) with four people who will enter the AIMA staff map in the general category and career of a technical assistant.

🟡The Government defined as a priority the reorganisation of AIMA's powers and the reinforcement of resources so that the agency functions “fully, equipped with the necessary resources to ensure a quick and effective response in matters of documentation, reception and integration of immigrants in the country”, reads the State Budget for 2025. For next year, 19 million euros are allocated to AIMA.

🟡If there is a shortage of employees, hire more, but don't embarrass us with the poor service you are providing.

🟡AIMA is yet another government agency that is unable to respond appropriately to requests. While it is true that the number of immigrants has increased in our country, it is no less true that they should be welcomed and that they can be an asset, given that we have an ageing population and a lack of labour

🟡It is unacceptable that people, when they arrive in Portugal, face such difficulty in obtaining a residence visa that allows them to rent a house, get a job or even study

🟡It is obvious that strict immigration control is desirable, but this does not mean that the current slowness and lack of respect for those who have chosen to live in our country are being maintained. Processes must be faster and targeted support is needed to inform and welcome people. If there is a shortage of staff, hire more, but do not embarrass us with the poor service you are providing.

🟡The loopholes mentioned above are only of interest to those looking for cheap and “illegal” labor or those who rent rooms for inflated prices without declaring this to the tax authorities. On the other hand, there are honest businesspeople who want to hire some of these people and cannot do so until their situation is regularized.

🟡The cheap populism that tries to create an anti-immigration wave does not work, and cannot work, otherwise we will penalize our economy and become what we never were. We have always been a hospitable, humanist and grateful people; that is our genesis and no one can adulterate it.

🟡It is important to “distinguish the wheat from the chaff”, there are many good people who come here to work with the aim of achieving a better life and these cannot be confused with those who want to do nothing or are dedicated to crime.

🟡It is complex to make this distinction perfectly, we know that, but there are no perfect solutions and here we also have good people and not so good people and that is not why we expel them from here, often, we still give them subsidies knowing that they do not want to work or choose crime as a way of life.

🟡This topic deserves reflection from everyone, let us remember how many emigrants we have today and how many we had in the past, the people who live in inhumane conditions, the companies that need labor, the opportunists who are suited to this situation like a glove and how many of the immigrants who are here and are so often looked at sideways will feel.

🟡These people are far from their countries, their families and, the vast majority, have simply taken risks in the legitimate search for a better life and deserve all our respect. We cannot turn their dreams into nightmares, disappointing them for having chosen us.

🟡The new posts are part of the Migration Action Plan launched by the Government last June. The goal is to provide support to foreigners, many of whom are seeking to regularize their documents in Portugugal
🟡The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) opens, this Friday (13/12), two more Local Support Centers for the Integration of Migrants (CLAIM) to assist foreigners in Portugal. The posts will operate in Caminha and Valença, in the North of the country, all in partnership with the Municipal Councils.

According to the government, the new AIMA posts for assisting immigrants are part of the Action Plan for Migration, approved on June 3. The goal, the agency and the municipalities emphasize in a note, is to allow the integration of migrants as a fundamental pillar of the national regulatory policy "more humanistic and with respect for the fundamental rights of foreign citizens who regularly seek shelter in the country."

🟡🟡 This text has been updated to make it clear that the Local Support Centers for Migrant Integration (CLAIM) are not part of the task force set up by the Portuguese Government to resolve pending cases at AIMA. The mission structure is temporary and will initially operate until June 30, 2025.

🟡 From today (20th November) onwards, the transport company Carris accepts payments on board with contactless bank cards or devices with NFC technology, also allowing the purchase of travel tickets for groups of up to 10 people, the company announced.

🟡 In a statement, Carris explains that it is now possible to pay for journeys using a contactless card on buses, trams and the three funiculars in the city of Lisbon.

🟡 "This is a historic day for Carris and for mobility in the city of Lisbon. With the introduction of payment by bank card, we reinforce our commitment to improving the travel experience of our customers, thus ensuring greater convenience and better accessibility in the use of our service", says the president of Carris, Pedro Bogas, quoted in the note.

🟡 The new payment option also allows the purchase of travel tickets for families or small groups, up to a maximum of 10 people, by directly selecting the number of tickets required.
