Returning to Lisbon from Alentejo

Vasco da Gama Bridge ~ formidable 'cable-stayed bridge' that crosses the Tagus River. It is 17.2 kilometers long and is the 2nd longest bridge in Europe.

It was inaugurated in 1998 as part of the Expo '98, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the 'Discovery of the Sea' by explorer Vasco da Gama; the first European to reach India by sea.

Prized its use for the bacalhau (dried and salted cod fish).
