Palmela Castle is a significant historical site near Lisbon. Perched strategically atop a hill in the Arrábida Natural Park, it offers expansive views of the Tagus and Sado rivers and surrounding areas.
With origins predating Roman times, the castle became a crucial Moorish stronghold before its definitive conquest by King Afonso Henriques in 1147. It later served as a vital base for the Order of Santiago, defending the Portuguese frontier.
Today, the castle is a blend of impressive ruins and a functioning pousada (historic hotel).
