When the Templar order was dissolved in the 14th century, the Portuguese branch transformed into the Knights of the Order of Christ. These knights later supported Portugal's maritime discoveries during the 15th century.
The complex includes both the Convent and the Castle. It stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The main church was built by the Knights Templar. Its "Manueline" nave is a stunning example of architectural craftsmanship.
I highly recommend visiting this remarkable piece of history!
