A pobreza energética severa é uma realidade para 17,4% da população portuguesa, das mais elevadas da União Europeia. A falta de investimento que é feita na escolha dos materiais de isolamento necessários na construção de uma casa é um problema que não só afeta a saúde física e mental de quem as habita, mas também o esforço económico que é acrescido no aquecimento e arrefecimento de espaços residenciais. O governo quer reduzir esta taxa para 10% até 2030. Isso só é possível através de escolhas mais sustentáveis e acessíveis de materiais de isolamento.

Severe energy poverty affects 17.4% of the Portuguese population, one of the highest rates in the European Union. The lack of investment in choosing the necessary insulation materials in building construction is a problem that not only impacts the physical and mental health of occupants but also increases the economic burden of heating and cooling residential spaces. The government aims to reduce this rate to 10% by 2030, achievable only through more sustainable and affordable choices of insulation materials.

We are based in two different countries, UK and Portugal, and we have been able to cultivate a collaborative environment, where team members complement each other’s strengths, and foster a culture of innovation.

In the UK, our team of specialised material scientists and biotechnology engineers are at the forefront, driving the development of our company’s products. In Portugal, a dedicated Production Team is focused on ensuring the scalability of our products, seamlessly transitioning from lab R&D to the manufacturing process. Meanwhile, our commercial and strategic team work collaboratively on business development, ensuring that our company grows cohesively and strategically.

We are really proud of our strong team, they are invaluable to Mykor, driving is growth, resilience, and overall success. Thank you all for being part of Mykor’s 1st year of history, and many years to come.

The team was finally all together after a year of working across two different countries, UK and PT, in our annually team retreat!

The tour started in Lisbon, where we have the office, and then, our scientists swapped their lab coat for swim shorts, enjoying their time in the countryside close to where we have our Factory in Montemor-o-Novo.

With time for wine tasting, tenis, family time, factory visits, photoshoot and lots of food and team building activities.

We took our time to talk about how much we have accomplished together and what are our collective ambitions for the future.

We are excited to announce our participation in Grand Design Live, which will take place in Birmingham NEC from October 4th to October 8th, 2023. We are proud to share that our materials have been chosen as part of Kevin's Green Heroes and will be featured in this area of the event.

We will also be part of London's exhibition - 4th to 12th May 2024 at London Excel.

Kicking off September with a great news! Mykor has been shortlisted for the Building Innovation Award 2023, in the category of Best Materials Innovation.

Congratulations to the other outstanding companies we have the privilege of standing alongside.

The winners will be announced on Thursday 12th October in Manchester.

We are developing our lastest project, an innovative and low carbon loose-fill insulation crafted from reclaimed bio-based waste feedstocks. This is a microscope image directly from our Lab in Bristol, showing that the mycelium is happy and healthy with the progress made so far 🍄

This new project received awarded funding from
as part of UK Research and Innovation initiative, with a primary focus on advancing sustainable biomanufacturing in the UK.

This collaborative effort includes contributions from Biorenewables Development Centre and the

This funding is a result of a joint investment by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council ( ), Engineering ad Physical Sciences Research Council ( ), and supporting a total of 34 feasibility studies nationwide.

As part of project, thermal conductivity testing is underway as part of characterisation and development of Mykor mycelium insulation products for buildings.

Mykor team in partnership with Architecture & Civil Engineering department are conducting this tests to accurately state and improve the performance of our insulation panels.

We are now featured in Solutions Library - A library of practical, real-world solutions for a variety of challenges faced in the build environment.

UKGBC is at the forefront of driving the transformation to a net zero, climate resilient and regenerative built environment.

We join them in the objective to unify the UK building industry in transforming the way it is planned, designed, constructed, operated and repurposed.

Mykor was nominated for Start Up Challenge Award for The World Materials Forum 9th edition. This event will be in Nancy from July 6th to 7th 2023 and Mykor will be present alongside pioneering projects.

For the 7th year in a row, Start Up nominees from the entire world will present on their booths innovative and impactful solutions in order to Use Materials Smarter, Less and Longer.

And for the 3rd time, Scale Up nominees will show during the Gala dinner how they are industrializing the breakthrough innovation for which they have been nominated at a previous WMF Start Up Challenge.

MykoFoam, is a carbon-negative insulation sheet for construction, bio assembled from cellulosic waste feedstock and fungal mycelium. The MykoFoam is 100% made of industrial waste and bound together by fungal mycelium adhesives. Fred, our Material Scientist, is focused on applying his great knowledge of chemistry and material development to innovate and improve the construction industry.

In his words: "Innovation within material development is essential not only to improve the materials that are used in the world around us but also in ensuring their impact is a positive one. This is achieved through simultaneous focus on the material properties of interest as well as an ethical view on how they are sourced and produced. By utilising natural products from waste sources and enhancing their beneficial material properties with intelligent, environmentally friendly and abundant additives, new materials that have a big impact on the construction industry are possible. The current materials popular for use within the construction industry typically have a high carbon cost both at the start and end of their lifetime, using natural materials and ensuring their biocompatibility is essential to reducing the overall impact of construction on the environment."

MykoFoam is an acoustic and thermal carbon-negative insulation sheet. It is 100%
made of renewable and bio-based materials sourced from industrial waste. Our technology presents improved water-proofing and stabilising properties for increased durability, whilst maintaining the breathable and fire-retardant benefits of mycelium insulation.
Mykor insulation sequesters -22kg of CO2 per m3 and its manufacturing process utilises 90% less water and 40% less electricity than polystyrene.
On average we have estimated that we will be able to repurpose 20k tonnes of waste each year.

Meet the team - our Mykor team keeps growing!

This is Carlos, our new Production Manager in Portugal. Carlos holds a bachelor's degree in Marine Biology and Biotechnology by I. P. Leiria, and a post-graduation in Applied Microbiology by the University of Lisbon. He had the opportunity to work in diversified sectors, which gave him a dynamic in terms of acquired expertise.

The challenges of a more sustainable and innovative future, combined with all his academic background and professional experience make him believe that he can contribute to a better future for Mykor.
